Refrigerating Tulip Bulbs

I'm in Maryland, close to D.C. For the past few years I've planted tulip bulbs (my favorite flower) in numerous black nursery pots and sunk them into a very large planting area. I cover them with a piece of chicken wire to keep squirrels from getting to them, then cover everything until early spring. I then lift them in early spring and put the black pots in other nice looking pots.

For the first 3 seasons, tulips were great. I had flowers for at least 3 weeks because they bloomed early, and temps were cooler.

Last winter here was very mild. My tulips did O.K., but not great. They bloomed to late because slow growth didn't allow me to proceed as in previous years, they got hit by warm temps, and I only had flowers for less than a week.

This year I'm considering refrigerating the bulbs prior to planting.

What I would like to do if possible, is plant bulbs directly in decorative pots from the fridge, and skip sinking them in to the ground for winter protection. I just canÂt figure out the timing to make the whole thing happen

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks,

SG
