Costco bulbs...

Costco in my area has started to display some bulbs, but not it the bulk I've read about. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with waiting a little while to purchase them, and if in a few weeks or so the variety and quantities become better.

Also, I didn't see any lilies. I'd like to get mine planted in the fall. Their website has a lily mix, but the price is high. I"m assuming they, along with Home Depot, will have them some time during the fall...??

I bought my Costco bulbs last week from a fairly good selection, but I would expect still a few more. I have not seen lily bulbs at costco this time of year. A few years ago they tried selling tulips by the crate of 1500 bulbs. At least in this location they did not sell and I think they finally threw them out. Home Depot did not have their tulips in yet and no one could tell me when they would arrive. Al

Don't wait because they don't last long. Usually the first is the best selection. They don't add. What you see is what you'll get.

I bought my usual bag of peony. Was able to find a bag with varieties not in my garden. They were better divisions than usual. I always pot them up the first year, transplanting into the garden after spring growth starts next spring. Johnny's Seeds has a small selection of 14cm tulips starting at $6.25 for 10 and going down from there for greater quantities. I bought some 14cm Pink Impressions from them last year and the blooms were enormous. The Costco Tulip bulbs are all 12cm+, and all the ones I've bought so far have been quite healthy, just as nice as the ones from Van Engelen, B&B's, and other quality mail order houses. Just found some in local Costco but they only had 80-100 count bags. I've already got 140 bulbs and nowhere to put that many more. Clerk said they'd be gone pretty soon, though. I end up impulsively grabbing bags of Muscari and Crocus every time I'm in Lowe's right up until November/December. Last year I grabbed more than those little bulbs and ended having nowhere to plant them. Gotta stay strong this year...LOL.

Thanks to all who responded. Costco doesn't publish its prices on warehouse items on its website, so really appreciated anuparaj's confirmation of my hazy recollection. I just wanted to buy a big ol' bunch of cheap bulbs as am planning on putting our house on the market and have had most of our bulbs "disappear" -- including thousands of bulbs purchased from B & B, Colorblends and other highly reputable mail order companies. I'm talking mostly daffs/narcissi, lots of crocus and a whole bunch of chionodoxa, all of which should have naturalized in the areas in which they were planted. Perhaps I have the dreaded narcissus bulb fly that lilydude mentioned? At any rate, to buy more bulbs, at whatever the price, seems to be throwing good money after bad at this point and I obviously need to figure out what happened to the bulbs already in the ground (if I can find any remaining!). By the way, the only problem I've had with mislabeled bulbs was when I used to buy them out of bulk bins at local garden stores. "Bulk", as in individual bulbs tossed into one of several containers. One day, I observed a darling little flaxen-haired tot about 4 years old, picking up bulbs from one container and carefully depositing them into another, having fun with her own version of Mancala. No wonder why some of my Thalias came up as Tete-a-tetes! Rain

t know about Costco, but I usually find lilies at Sam's and other box stores no earlier than late January.

our Sam's has bags of 100 tulips or daffs for 13 and change.

They also have boxes of all kinds of things for 14 and change.

I got 100 yellow daffs (to finish a planting started 4 years ago) and 60 orange daffs (cause my wife requested them)...

Now I just need to find a couple hundred or so "glory of the snow" and some more species tulips and I'll be good (and my front will likely be done (except for digging up and dividing daffs next spring).

Picked up about 450 tulips (Triumph, Darwin and LIly) from HD and Costco last week. About 100 Hyacynth as well. Costco had a good variety, 60 for $13.99. I like the fact that Costco has multiple color combos in the same bag.

So including a couple bags of crocus, I've got close to 600 bulbs in the fridge. I checked the prices on the non-chill bulbs (Daffs, Dutch Iris, Freesia and Muscari) and they are basically the same at Costco and HD.
