Yipppeeee- Costco tulip bulbs have arrived

I've just been to Costco today and they have arrived. I got 6 bags of 50 tulips each. 100 of two varieties and 50 of another. I would have gotten another bag of 50 but the display was up against another display and I couldn't get to it. They must have just gotten them in.

For anyone who hasn't tried their tulips bulbs - they are awesome. And 50 of them cost 8.67, an excellent price.

Does anyone remember when Costco cell lily bulbs?
Maureen, I agree, excellent price and quality. They also have daffodils, irises and other spring bulbs.

Costco sells lilies in a fall and in a spring.
Lilies usually come to the shelves in mid-late October, because they are not harvested till September.
Whatever you'll see in September would be a last year leftovers.

I quit buying bulbs from big box stores a long time ago due to more than half not being what was advertised.... Many also resent being in packages so long, especially if they are not really bulbs or are planted at the wrong time of year. Most true bulbs need to be planted in the fall. They need winter in the ground. Tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, crocus, Dutch and reticulata iris should all be planted in the fall. Lilies aren't as dormant and should be planted immediately or they dry out and die. Many plants labeled lilies are not really lilies and do not like to be bare rooted and packaged.

My tulips are all in a refrigerator until the first week of December when they will be planted in the garden. I buy a mix of early, mid-season and late varieties and plant them together at the same time. This will give a longer season of bloom. As the early bloomers want to go to seed, snap off the spent bloom. Although the foliage will be gradually fading it will be hidden by the later bloomers and will not be objectionable. I always let my tulips foliage yellow and die back before digging as I save the largest bulbs for planting next year. Tulips I have saved (I only save those bulbs at least 12 CM circumference)will always bloom at least two weeks earlier than the earliest newly purchased bulb. Well, let me pipe up about my Costco bagged bulb/roots experiences over the past few years. My gardening obsession is with Hostas -have 70+ at this point- and I never fail to buy a few bags of them @ Costco if they are either varieties I do not have as yet, or they're ones I can easily sell in my annual spring plant sales. I have 4 new varieties potted up in my greenhouse as of about 10 days ago. Yes, I have had several batches of HVX infected roots and there has never been a problem returning those for a refund. The key here is of course recognizing it in the first place, which I can and do. Must say I've become a bit of a nuisance perhaps in some nurseries as I point out infected stock to them..... And I've had my share of mislabeled plants where the contents do not match the description. I ALWAYS pot up my new Hosta acquisitions, so they are much more easily scrutinized during the course of the first growing season. Lilies are another favourite of mine and yes, you will encounter incorrectly labeled bulbs, but, the price is right... I have had some problems though with perennials like Heucheras and Echinecea from them. If you buy them too long after they arrived at the store they will have sat at too high an ambient temperature for too long without being planted and you may well find nothing much comes up out of those roots. Tuberous/root perennials from any bare bagged display are best purchased and planted as early as possible IMHO, if you wait too long their viability is seriously impeded.

Thanks to all who responded. Costco doesn't publish its prices on warehouse items on its website, so really appreciated anuparaj's confirmation of my hazy recollection. I just wanted to buy a big ol' bunch of cheap bulbs as am planning on putting our house on the market and have had most of our bulbs "disappear" -- including thousands of bulbs purchased from B & B, Colorblends and other highly reputable mail order companies. I'm talking mostly daffs/narcissi, lots of crocus and a whole bunch of chionodoxa, all of which should have naturalized in the areas in which they were planted. Perhaps I have the dreaded narcissus bulb fly that lilydude mentioned? At any rate, to buy more bulbs, at whatever the price, seems to be throwing good money after bad at this point and I obviously need to figure out what happened to the bulbs already in the ground (if I can find any remaining!). By the way, the only problem I've had with mislabeled bulbs was when I used to buy them out of bulk bins at local garden stores. "Bulk", as in individual bulbs tossed into one of several containers. One day, I observed a darling little flaxen-haired tot about 4 years old, picking up bulbs from one container and carefully depositing them into another, having fun with her own version of Mancala. No wonder why some of my Thalias came up as Tete-a-tetes! Rain

Their in-store prices are better than on-line ones. Besides mentioned above $8.67 bags they have 100 tulip and 75 daffodil bulbs for less than $12 now.

We don't even have a Costco, LOL! Considering the price of gas, I don't think the 3 1/2 hour drive to Denver would be worth it :)

Those 75 daffs/$12 are very small bulbs.
Wait intill mesh bags of 100/$15-17 arrive. Those usually of good size and quality.

I snapped up a mesh bag of 100 red Darwin Hybrid tulips at Sam's last week. They also had daffs. They were gone when I went today. I guess the word is out.

Just in case anyone's interested in:
I bought huge 14+cm Darwin hybrid and Single Late tulip bulbs (so-called 'perennial tulips') at local Home Depot today. The price is $5.97 for 8 bulbs. The bulbs look firm and healthy . All other tulips are 11-12cm there.

Johnny's Seeds has a small selection of 14cm tulips starting at $6.25 for 10 and going down from there for greater quantities. I bought some 14cm Pink Impressions from them last year and the blooms were enormous.

The Costco Tulip bulbs are all 12cm+, and all the ones I've bought so far have been quite healthy, just as nice as the ones from Van Engelen, B&B's, and other quality mail order houses.

Just wanted to mention that Costco got more bulbs in. Today I bought 20 Hyacinth (10 Blue Jacket, 10 City of Haarlem) for $8.79; 50 Tulips (25 Creme Upstar and 25 Mount Tacoma) for $8.79; and 50 Tulip Silverstream for $8.79. There were a lot of other kinds of tulips and lots of other bulbs.

Now I just have to find time to plant them, the 200+ bulbs I already bought from local places and the 300+ bulbs that Scheeper's is shipping to me next week... :o)
