Broccoli... direct seeding... when & how??

My "better half" has specifically requested broccoli in this spring's garden. My seed starting set up is already maxed out with the tomatoes, peppers and eggplants that will be going into the flats in a few weeks...

Can I successfully direct sow broccoli in the garden?

If so, what time range and soil temp are the best targets?

Any advice on soil prep, row spacing, etc. would also be appreciated.

If direct seeding is out, I guess I'd better get to work on more lights and supplies...

Direct seeding is possible but I would not reccomend it. Another uption is the cold frame. I start all my brassicas this way. They don't need a lot of heat. Yhis one is home made with framing timbers and a glass pane froma storm door. Starts roughly a hundred plants.

This is my first year sowing Zinnias directly too. In the past I put them into little peat pellets, let them grow a couple weeks and then put them out. They where always magnificent, the envy of the neighbourhood! Then, last year we where selling the house, and I forgot to get them started. Around June, the agent told me that I needed more "colour" in the garden, so off to the nursery I went to buy my sure fire Zinnias, already started for me! I spent a fortune on them, they where in 4 or 5 inch pots, and almost 8 inches high when I planted them and the result was... PITIFUL! Those poor flowers struggled and clumg for dear life the whole growing season! So, I have become a big believer that direct sown, or sown very closely after germinating is indeed best! since you have so many seeds, I would perhaps throw down some seed when you think you "might" get away with it. but hold some back for the next few weeks, and overseed... This way if frost does get the first bunch, you will have more to try! I have not adivce for birds, but if the seed is burried or raked in, chances are I would think they would leave it alone. As for frost, my mother lives in a zone 1. (Yeah, not a typo). The thing all the old ladies do with their plants, because they do manage to grow things in those 50-75 days they can... is throw a blanket over anything that is frost sensitive for the night if the weather threatens. They all keep a stack of "garden blankets" handy. It is very easy then to cover large areas, quickly, with little fussing! And has worked with excellent results for as long as they can remember!

Broccoli transplants, right? Wait another 10 days-2 weeks normally but given what I have heard about the weather in your area it may be longer. But you can start your seeds indoors now. Have you even been able to till your garden soil yet? If so then lettuce and pea seeds can be planted now or even 2 weeks from now. How you know when is by watching your weather forecasts and checking your soil temps. Each variety of plant has a specific ranges of soil temps needed for seed germination. Many charts are available on the web. If I grow peas, will they be done producing by the time it is to plant tomatoes? English green peas? No they will still be producing so save some room for the first tomato plants some where else. Once the peas are finished you can put some later tomato plants there. They don't all have to be planted at the same time. Dave

Dear Bonjoey: Sounds like you're having the same trouble I had. If your New Jersey spring was as cold as my Long Island spring, the raab plants got confused and began to flower (set seed) before the plants had a chance to grow. When they begin flowering when only inches high they are goners. I pulled mine out and replaced them with other things. Meanwhile I started some new seed for later planting. Dear Violet: Ordinarily, when my raab plants reach full growth (2-3 feet high) that's when the florets begin forming, all over the plant. I pick them just before they begin to open up, picking daily until the florets become too small to bother with. This can go on for two to three weeks until the plants run out of gas and I replace them with new plants waiting in the wings. You suggest cutting them back at their bases. I'm here to learn. Please explain further.

You can thin now to a few inches apart; and then after they have a couple sets of true leaves, transplant to more rows. Most varieties you want about 18 in apart. Just make sure if you transplant to dig deep and wide enough to get the whole root system. One bad and then good thing about most brassicas is that the seedlings sometimes get kind of leggy and squirrely, but you can actually plant them below soil level an inch or so to straighten out the main stalk--- Kind of like tomatoes. By the way, brassica seeds also keep pretty long also. Bought a pack each of cauli and broccoli seeds 5-6 years ago and just got the last few of them to germinate a few weeks ago. Kevin

Broccoli:
Germination soil temperature: 50Â°-85Â°F, optimum 77Â°F
Days to germination: 7-10
Sow indoors: 6-8 weeks before last frost
Soil pH: 6.0-6.8
Growing soil temperature: 65Â°-75Â°F
Spacing of plants: 14-18 inches in all directions
Soil prepartation: Broccoli prefers humus rich, moist well-drained soil. Early season crops do best in sandy loam, loam or silt loam. Change planting location annually to avoid soil nitrogen depletion. Add compost to soil before planting. Apply two light application of blood and bone meal, or liquid fertilizer during the growing season.

I live in South Florida. Set the broccoli plants in pots and then just threw some on the beds. The ones on the beds gave better results. (Just my experience). Currently they are about 8" tall and I have much more than I expected

Here in central In. I sow seeds in plastic pots about the 22nd of March and plan to transplant them out on the 15th of April...weather permitting. the worst thing for broccoli is to leave them in pots too long or if direct seeded , to not thin them early enough.

They can be direct seeded about the 17th of April. A strip of clear plastic over the soil until the seeds first start to coming up will help greatly and it also keeps cold rains off. The plastic is optional and MUST be removed as soon as any seeds come up.

Broccoli needs about 24 inches or so between plants. Several plants grown in a group is good as the plants will shade the soil better.

So I have a question for the experts. My last frost is mid-April (Wilmington, DE is April 10, Williamsport, PA is April 30)...so I'm figuring Havertown is mid-April since we're about 15 miles out of Wilmington...

ANYHOW...I want to start my broccoli indoors and then transplant outside. My question is....can I transplant earlier than my last frost date IF I use a coldframe over it? I have panes of glass that I could essentially put over my raised beds to make a makeshift coldframe.

Thoughts? I'd like to get them in the ground mid-end of March to get a 2-4 week jump on the grow season.

Last average frost daye here is April 15. I seeds February 1 and start transplanting around the spring equinox. Seems to work best for me. Although hardened broccoli and cauliflower will tolerate temps in the mid twenties, They tend to button if thier growth cycle is interupted
