Has anybody tried Solomon's wide, wide spacings?

I've been reading S. Solomon's "Gardening When it Counts"--a very interesting and unusual book. It suggests much wider spacings than most intensive methods recommend--48" x 48" for one indeterminant tomato, for example, and 24" (!) between pole beans. A single vining cuke gets a 24" X 48" space. He says that these spacings will allow the plants to keep growing, and producing, for a longer time. He says the plants will be healthier. He says I'll have to water them much less. I'm going to give it a shot to see if it works. Anybody else tried it?
