too much water or not enough?

Hello- I am new to this forum (and to gardening in general). I recently made a new mounded flower bed and planted some annuals. Within two days, they have all died. I have watered daily and it even rained one day. I am not sure if I am overwatering or if they are underwatered. How can I tell? The soil is a combo of topsoil and a bit of peat moss mixed in. I also "roughed" the roots a bit when planting the annuals, but perhaps that was a mistake?

I am sorry I cannot tell you the name-- they were cone shaped fuschia colored flowers (not petals as much as "fuzzy" looking". I also used some miracle grow.

They get full sun and that is what the annuals called for...so I am okay on that.

Thanks for the tips.
