Crazy heat/drought tolerant volunteer petunias

I have these purple and white volunteer petunias that pop up anywhere the soil is disturbed in my yard, even in the lawn. I just leave the ones that don't get mowed down because they're pretty.

In my front yard I planted a bed of daffodils last year and now have a bed full of petunias, the weird thing is that I've only watered them once or twice, but they just keep blooming. The heat here is atrocious, it's been at or above 100 degrees for at least a month.

My question--is it normal for petunias to be so heat and drought-tolerant? The only petunias I've ever grown have been purchased plants for containers, but I've never had any this tough. I've never bothered to save the seeds from my petunias because they self-seed so readily, but I'm wondering if I should because this trait is something "special" for a petunia.
