How are your dahlias doing?
Comments (11)Hi Dee :-) My first year trying Dahlia too. I bought 24" tall Dahlias Gallery Monet, Star's Lady, and Bluesette, from Brent and Becky's when they had their 50% off sale. They were $3. a piece I am pretty sure. I have been pleasantly surprised that they have done well for me. They are producing blooms and of course, I could always want more, but a fair amount of flowers and the blooms that are there are very attractive. Star's Lady is great and Gallery Monet was just a little washed out looking and didn't have as much shading as the catalog photo. I grew both of these in their own large clay pot with nothing else growing with them and they are doing fine. I am keeping them moist and almost full sun. The third bulb..Bluesette...I added to another large pot with petunias, coleus and variegated sage. It is not doing well. It took a long time to bloom, the bloom wasn't as nice as it should have been, one whole stem seemed to develop some sort of wilty foliage problem which I cut off. I would say those in their own pots are doing great. Maybe that makes a difference. Star's Lady on July 9th, first bloom, hasn't quite developed the quilled appearance. Subsequent blooms did and I need to get an updated photo....See MoreWhat plants themselves in your garden?
Comments (21)There should be some extreme punishment for those who still harbor privets in their yards -- like being required to come weed out every last one of the hundreds of seedlings appearing under my trees each year, deposited by birds. I cut out the 12 or so large ones growing here within 6 months of moving in and have noticed, over the past decade, that most of the neighbors have followed suit (except one right next door, whose privets are also infested with oak root fungus and as a result are not only a menace but look dreadful -- grrrr! He also has some highly mildewed specimens of Dorothy Perkins hanging over the fence. I keep hoping these two problems will cancel each other out...). On the other hand, Geranium pyrenaicum "Bill Wallis" seeds itself around with wild abandon and I do not mind -- it blooms wonderfully all winter and spring, then is easily pulled out when it starts to look ratty. It is especially good at inserting itself in vertical rock crevices. "Bowle's Black" viola is also great -- once you've had it, there it is, no effort required. I also like what I think is Freesia alba x leichtlinii which was here when we arrived and gets spread around when plants get moved -- ubiquitous but not obnoxious. As long as the guest stays small, looks reasonably nice, and doesn't bully, I usually don't mind. Free ground cover....See MoreWeird Toys Your Pets Chose for Themselves?
Comments (18)A blue robe belt started off as a toy over 20 yrs ago for our then kitten, but evolved into a "woobie" (like a security blanket, I guess). She's never been without it. She pulls it around the house and cries this pathetic, gutteral caterwauling at least once a night with it, sometimes more. It's usually draped over a door knob, until she pulls it off and drags it into the living room--here she is with it. It somehow draped over her when she pulled it off the door knob and stayed on....See MoreToilet That Can Stand Up to Being in Bath Next to Garage
Comments (8)My garage is on the lee side of my house but the wind does come around and swirl right in front of it so I can understand getting all that dust and grit in there. No matter how often we clean it there is always grime that walks into the house with us. I second the wall mount toilet. I never thought of them when I was replacing my toilets within the past two years but if ever again, that is the route I would take under any circumstances. The idea of just mopping underneath rather than the contortions needed to get around and behind floor mounted toilets sounds wonderful. I love my Toto's but I too am unimpressed with the sani-gloss. I think it might work well if the toilet got constant use but with only 2 of us in the house the surface dries out between flushes....See Morevetivert8
