I was amazed at how some Star Lily Glads multiplied in their first year! Finally found the shriveled old bulb on the bottom of new one after they dried and twisted them off. I don't think they should be divided after only one year, correct? A few have side cormlets that are almost an inch from bottom to tip. Will those little side cormlets bloom in addition to the main new bulb? I'm assuming they need another year or two to develop internal bloom baby and then I divide them. The only reason I had the bulbs in my hot little hands because they had to be dug up since I was rearranging the bed for next Spring. I wouldn't even have known about twisting off the original corm if I hadn't read this forum. Thanks!

Do you know the variety? There are early, mid, and late season ones. Pinetree Gardens has a guide on their glad page that might help you figure out roughly when they'll bloom. Maybe your variety is listed there. This link should take you directly to their glad page. I don't know what they might have, but the longer they're out of the ground, the more they will deteriorate, IME. I used to grow beautiful glads when I lived in z9, but when you can leave them in the ground, it's easy. Not sure what made the bite marks,but I've had squirrels raid my pots of bulbs. Usually they dig into the soil, though. That container you're showing looks too shallow or short. I think even before they would flower, the leaves alone would tip it over. I tried glads in deeper containers last year. They made great leaves but didn't flower. I figured they needed more sun and better drainage so keep that in mind if you plant in pots.

Treat 'em like a crop...cos they pretty much are. Rubbish in the garden (Ken's right - they are fleeting and take up too much room... but fab in almost any vase or vessel - singly or en-masse. Unless they are the little nanus or species, then let's face it - we are growing glads because we want huge vases of giant gaudy flowers (who wouldn't?)...so grow them in a row, somewhere out of sight (not in a perennial bed, that's for sure), where you can chop them at will. And if you have over 50, then plant them in 2 week staggers so you can pick them for weeks. I grow quite a lot of smaller ones and edge my veggie beds with them. The bulbs seem to happily return, even when picked for the house...but they are so cheap that it wouldn't matter if they were just a single season blow-out.
