Suggestions for a 6-foot long window box?

I have wanted one of those PVC or Fiberglass window boxes for nearly 10 years now. Seriously. I FINALLY decided to treat myself to one of those expensive numbers- and they are pricey. Anyway, the box is 9.5 inches wide and 10 inches deep by 6 feet long. This box is supposed to be the center piece of my garden this year (I do mostly perennials in my flower beds and save the annuals for containers). My house is in a small cul-de-sac so I want this box to have curb appeal from the main road.

I want some serious 'bling' in this thing and am open to any color scheme. What are the 'must have' plants for this container? I will be putting coconut fiber in to help with water retention as I do in all my pots. The window box will take a lot of heat as it has a southeast exposure. Thanks!

Cosmos always put on a show and are so easy to grow. What about petunias, lobelia, coleus, snapdragons, and nicotiana as well?

There are so many options. Hope you'll post some photos when it's planted for us to see!

Well with the sun exposure your talking bout ,I found some of the best heat lovers are zinnias. Some of the new ones are great for this type of planting. Their bold colors ,large range of sizes and flower type. These easy care plant perform great in the heat of summer ,simple deadheading keeps these plant blooming till frost. take a look at your plant catalogs,online guides,these plant are great performers! I did a small window box that hangs near my front gate last year of zinnias,orange,yellowand a lil red. perfect for that spot with it's bast of color.

So beautiful Bindersbee! I was just about to post a request for photos of window flower boxes ideas, and here you are. I have 2 Hayrack Trough Window Boxes (metal ones, with coco liners), and was looking for ideas on planting material for spring. Ask your father for a kit of tools as a gift. He can get a small battery powered drill if he starts watching the adds for fathers day. You also need the manual kit of home tools that comes with hammer, small hand saw, screwdrivers, and pliers. The holes are better if they are on the side of the container rather than all on the bottom. That way you can put the rocks which will help provide some drainage and the hopefully small amount of water surrounding the rocks will provide humidity. Everyone needs one of these kits. I keep one in the trunk of my car to do small repairs at work. Makes a nice gift and for younger people starting out it tells them and their parents that the recipient is truely an adult.

Wasabi, I have something of a Magnolia obsession (for both the evergreen and deciduous varieties). As you say, even it a M.g. were hardy, they are BIG trees. The ones I see sold around me (NJ/Zone 7) are considered among the best for cold but also SNOW LOADS (which is also a big time consideration..., especially in areas prone to HEAVY wet snow). The ones I see sold include Edith Bogue, Victorias, and Bracken Browns. But again, if they did survive they wanna dominate the site big time (horizontally too). Not a tree for winter interest but Magnolia virginiana is a terrific species. It has a very airy, open structure and the flowers are extremely aromatic (more so than the evergreen variety..., but much smaller). Good luck!

Somewhere I saw a house that had a long, 12" to 15" wide wire-topped table under its first floor windows. It was set with lots of red geraniums in same-size pots. Very pretty. Easy to water because of the wire, and it would be easy to replace an individual plant if needed. So, not a true "window box" but it avoids the "how to attach it" issue.
