Yes - read a few books Michael. I don't want to sound mean here, but you really don't have much of a clue, and while we all have to learn and that means dead trees along the way, you could save a lot of grief by backing up a few steps, taking a deep breath and focusing on one step at a time. You seem to have gotten some wrong info along the way apart from anything... bonsai-in-bulk are not planted in clay, but in mostly peaty potting soil, which does hold water much too long, but you haven't said what you repotted into, so it might or might not be good. Fertilizing every few days(!) for an already stressed out tree is way over the top... once in two wks maybe a place to start. Planting the 'trunk beneath the soil' (the whole thing??) is deadly and may be the reason you now have rot somewhere. Trees should never be planted any deeper than they were at the nursery, or in the store, etc., as the trunk and roots will rot. Misting it all the time is a waste of time too, but I can't comment on an ultrasonic hum. Why not just use a proper hum. tray - one full of stones and water - just be sure the water's never high enough to touch the pot. You're not growing moss or fly-traps after all. You may be under another misapprehension - that misting substitutes for proper watering, and it can't. Misting can grow mold and mildew on the surface and leaves too, so quit it. The roots need water, not just the leaves (and in fact You have to water plants, and depending on what they are, what they're planted in and where they're located, it could be often or rarely, never to a schedule though and always well (as opposed to just the surface - and ). Have you got it in the sun? How much and for how long each day? Right now if your tree has a hope (and I sorta doubt it) a house plant fungicide might help - but follow directions on the label, don't just dump it on. And for your sake and other trees' sakes, please go read up on what you're doing.

I would have to echo charpixpix419 on this one... I've had mine for about 6 years now without any real hassle (varigated variety). It has only been inside (dang squirels snack on it / knock it over outside) on a window sill (done fine on both south and west facing windows). The only problem I've had was when I neglected it (no water) for a week and a half to two weeks... it was bone dry! I continued to water it (hoping for the best), but it was pretty obvious it was gone as I knew it. After sitting in the pot for another month or so (I'm optimistic), I decided to throw it away. I cut the trunk at the base and started to pull the roots out. I only got them an inch or so out of the pot before I got distracted by something else. More days passed before I got a chance to get back to it, but when I did return (to my extreme surprise), new leaves were emerging from the roots I had exposed. Before that incident, I rooted a cutting from the same tree. It's probably around a year old now and growing like a weed. We recently went on vacation (8 days) and it was as happy when I returned as when I just left. It actually surprised me with two blooms when we got home! So after all that rambling... the best advise I have to offer is to mess with the tree as little as possible. Leave it alone and only water when the soil has started to become dry. Right now, mine (the cutting) is in a 6" pot. When I water, I soak it until water is flowing out of the bottom (I water it in the sink). I don't water again until the top of the soil looks dry. Sometimes the soil around the top edge will begin to draw back (1/4" or so) before I water again. Obviously the time between waterings will depend on the size of the plant and the pot it is in. For mine, it likes water every 7 to 10 days. From what I've read here and in other places, the worst thing you can do is overwater a Serissa. From my experience, too much water will turn the leaves black (starting at the edges), while lack of water will turn them yellow / brittle. Either way, the affected leaf falls off the tree at some point. Good Luck! John

The two worst plants any beginner can start with are serissa and fukien tea, the problem is that both of these are 'pleasing' to the eye and look nice to start with. Both can be and usually are a royal pain in the butt to work with. When in the states I grew mine in a greenhouse setting (along with a few other tropicals) but never a FT. What you should do is Google care of them, there is a wealth of info on the web. If you go to the website of Jerry Mislick he has a ton of information on care of most tropicals and he grows them indoors way up north. To handle them indoors you will need at least flourecent lighting 5 or 6" above the plants. With just a few one standard double tube fixture should be enough to work. Humidity trays help but with dry central heating it's more of a placebo for you in the winter. You should buy the highest wattage tubes you can find and 'full spectrum' is best. They should have the lights on 12 to 14 hours a day. The plants will get 'leggy' but you just prune that back in the spring. As a point of information: I did a test of serissa vs. soil mixes a number of years ago under controlled conditions. The winning medium was pure medium Perlite...which looks really crappy when used in a Bonsai pot. Bob

Hi there - where are you in Poland? I love that country! I spent a couple of months in Krakow teaching at Jagiellonian last year and long to go back to the Rynek and drink a Zywiec... Anyway, I think you've diagnosed the problem yourself - get a proper pot with holes in the bottom (perhaps you could place it in a tray with stones to catch the water and provide some humidity), proper soil (I don't know what you can get there - anything with a lot of perlite will be fine), and proper fertilizer (something with a 3-1-1 ratio on the NPK numbers). That should take care of it! At least it hasn't died :) I feel like I should own some stock because I give it so many props, but you should visit fourwindsgrowers.com.
