miguel, so your hypothesis is that it is not so simple as merely a longer warmer growing season that allows rebloom but specific light/nutrient/water conditions..? hmmm well right now, i only have one data point to give you - ramona from her post bloom haircut last year. i gave her a very severe 2/3 haircut last year and that could have some impact. i do not recall fertilizing with pellets/compost/liquid after pruning. i watered whenever it didn't rain for 2 weeks. ramona is planted right next to one of my multiblues, SSE facing with afternoon shade btw 1-4pm due to some big trees in our neighbor's yard, possibly in the fall they get less sun due to the angle of the sun.. also cultivar could very well be a consideration. ramona typically blooms at least 2-3 weeks later than my other group 2s... so i just pruned my multiblue today by 1/2 to see if it will rebloom this year. although the summer was late by 2-3 weeks this year so again that can throw the results. wow, this isn't going to be a very scientifically sound experiment - too many variables really. but sounds like fun nonetheless! entling and eden, i'm so excited you're going to do this with me! eden i don't think it is possible for you to plant too deep.. and i know what you're saying about wanting them to finish blooming. when i pruned nelly and multiblue this weekend, i clipped off a few flowers/pompoms that were still in bloom in my rush to clean up the plants.. it almost feels as if my OCCD (obsessive compulsive clematis disorder) is wearing off a little..

@Shad Burns I'm curious, where did you buy your seeds or vines from? I grow them too, and I'm always curious about the source of passiflora incarnata, when grown successfully in zone 5/6. Mine were selected from the wild, in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio. I'm always interested in hardier strains. @Helene Albert I am in zone 5b, Chicago suburbs, literally a stone throws away from you. I grow passiflora incarnata successfully. I have fruit that's ready to harvest at end of August continuing through to October. It's truly a may sprouting perennial for me. If anyone is growing passiflora incarnata in zone 4/5/6a, please send me a message through Houzz by clicking my profile. You should be able to send to me, however. I collect hardy passiflora incarnata. There is some genetic variation. Even the white version of P. incarnata aren't the same, with at least 5+ different strains floating around.

HI folks Sorry I've been off posting since last fall - I've missed you all. Partly I've been online so incredibly long hours teaching (university) that I haven't been able to stand being online any more than I have to be. Also, I had a devastating garden-wide bout with Rose Rosette Disease last fall and had to take out about 20 roses and prune ABSOLUTELY everything else to the ground to hope to avoid catastrophic rose disaster. I'll post separately about that, maybe this weekend. Suffice to say for 1000 roses several of which were 12' tall and 10 years old (owning their own dumpsters) this was an exhausting and demoralizing fall. To respond to folks in warmer zones that just got that bizarre freeze all the way to Texas, it doesn't hurt to wait a bit to prune. Dead canes don't cause the rose problems any more than long fingernails cause you problems beyond inconvenience, though if there is downy mildew spotting it's probably good to prune sooner than later. I try to wait till the rose starts leafing out and you can see what is alive at that point. Seil, no I'm not remotely pruning at this point - the post is several years old and was from mid to late March. We're still recovering from the snowiest January ever and one of the coldest Februaries ever. Thank heavens it was in that order! Under the snow it's always 32 degrees however cold the air gets, and we had easily two feet of snow (16" in one snowfall) protecting everything. It's just now starting to melt with temps this week into the 40's all week, but it'll be a long time till I'm out in the garden. Great tips about not pruning once-bloomers Seil. Fortunately those are among the roses that don't take any pruning at all and I almost never see winter damage. Occasionally I'll see a once bloomer shed a cane for some reason, but that can be pruned out after the spring bloom to avoid disrupting the other canes. For the first year ever since growing roses, i have absolutely no rose pruning to do this spring. Everything was pruned to the ground so it's a matter of seeing what resprouts from the ground, and anxiously checking for any signs of RRD and ruthlessly digging out. Heya guys, I have planted my QMLO baby outside in my yard, in a well drained location. I had planted it about 2 weeks ago. I kinda HAD to because it had been getting some new spring leaves on it, and I was afraid that IF I HAD WAITED much longer, that I would not have been able to plant it outside in the ground, and be able to have dealt with all of the circling roots that were in the pot that it had been growing in while it was in the greenhouse. I really hope that I haven't messed up by planting it out TOO SOON. When we have gotten a cold spell, about 34F, I have been using a little shelter to protect the QMLO baby, BUT, I have seen that those new leaves on the QMLO baby have died. But, the QMLO baby has NOT been exposed to tempts lower than 34F so far. And, I have been covering the tree when it has been about 34F. I had used a heavy frost cloth, and wrapped it around the baby QMLO., while it was STILL inside the "little shelter", so, I am REALLY HOPING that my QMLO baby is going to be good. I would have just kept my baby QMLO in my greenhouse until after my area's last frost date, but, I had to deal with many circling roots that were in the pot where my baby QMLO had been living. And, so, me dealing with all of those circling roots had been BEST for my baby QMLO, and that is OF COURSE, WHY, I had been so eager to go on ahead AND TRANSPLANT MY QMLO into an actual bed of native soil in my yard. I really hope that I have done right by my little QMLO tree. BTW, I will mention that in my area here, we have (as of the WHOLE WINTER) only gone down to a low of 7F, so, NO below zero temps this WHOLE WINTER! I do find that amazing! But, of course, we can't just figure that we will not ever experience those REALLY frigid winters ever again! BUT, as of April 2024, we have been at a zone 7a hardiness zone rating. Anyways, I REALLY do wish that my QMLO will be able to rebound fine after experiencing some quite FROSTY nights, and that my effort to protect them, will be successful. I have REALLY tried to cover my QMLO baby with a heavy frostcloth, and also having it inside a shelter that totally encloses the tree. I totally feel GREAT about protecting the tree, BUT, I do also hope that I haven't killed the tree by me planting it out too early in my yard. All that I can ask is that people,, just, Wish me luck.
