Please Help With Tulip Question

Last year I planted early, mid and late tulips in two beds. They were magnificent! I realize tulips do not always bloom the following year, so I wasn't expecting much this year. I guess I am lucky, because one bed is FULL of leaves, many with buds. The other bed isn't doing as well. I have some tulips coming up, but half the bed is empty. I remember this pattern from last year-I think one bed gets more sun. My question is; if I don't see any sign of plants as of now, can I hope that there is still a possibility that some of the plants are just slow this year? I am in NJ/zone 7. We haven't had much sun or warm temps this spring. Do any of you think once the weather warms up I might still get some growth? Thanks for any help!

DonÂ´t expect anything and anything that happens is welcomed, you mentioned one of the beds gets more sun, thatÂ´s enough to cook some bulbs if you ask me, I know it from experience.

My garden is oriented SE-SW, any tulip or daffodil bulb I plant on the right side of the garden is going to die, I have to plant those bulbs on the left side of the garden, while the bulbs planted on the left side only get a few of hours of direct sunlight by mid day the are shaded by the walls while anything planted on the right side of the garden gets cooked because it gets direct sunlight almost all day long, and whatÂ´s worse, gets sunlight during the hottest hours of the day resulting in dead bulbs due to overheating. My heat loving bulbs ( dahlias, amaryllises, ixias, babianas, tuberoses ) are alaways planted on the right side of the garden for the same reason.

Pretty hard to give a specific ID just based on the photo but one can make suggestions for tulips of similar coloring. The ones in the back look like 'Pink Impression'. In the foreground, the lighter purple tulips could be any of a dozen or more different varieties - 'Purple Lady', 'Purple Rain', 'Singapore', 'Othello', 'Passionale', etc. The darker purple variety could be 'Negrita' or 'Queen of the Night'. And it's almost impossible to discern what the blue flowers are......much too small a photo to work from. Need a close up!! But you could get the same effect by interplanting with muscari or blue hyacinths. But they look more like blue flowered pansies to me.

In the tulip time thread you can see my pictures of tulips and hyacinths. The tulips are just blooming so those are pictures from last season. They have both been in the ground now for 7 years. So they will come back in NC if you are in the same area as me (we seem to be in the same zone). Perhaps water them well and make sure you don't pull out any foliage until it is completely brown (by then they don't even look unsightly and can decompose). Mulch them as well to lock in moisture and they should come back stronger next year. I never fertilize so if you do you should take into account the best times to do so. I am not sure about fertilizing. Good luck!

yep, definately T.linifolia. What a swizz - alba coerulea are soooo expensive too. Much more so than linifolia.

Are you over watering? 2 gallons a day for small plants seem like a lot. If you stick you finger in the soil and its not dry several inchs down don't water. David
