Fess up: Who's not done planting yet?

Yep, that would be me. I still have 1/2 flat of impatiens to plant in the front of the house and also some browallia in the back beds. I just haven't had time to get this done (because of course the week I was on vacation last month and was going to plant was cool and rainy, just like every year :b). Well, at least I got the bulk of it done, just this little bit left to finish, I WILL get it done tomorrow!

That would be me, too... I've still got impatiens to plant, too. Plus, I have to replant a new batch of fibrous begonias in the front because all the rain we are having has caused my first planting to rot.

I took out the rotten begonias, and now I have little holes everywhere - I can't replant yet because it's sopping wet, and the rain is still falling. My beds look just lovely this year - think I'll try the empty holes again next year... Oh well, what can you do? lol.

I do mostly container gardening but I'm still sticking plants here and there and will continue for a while. I don't quit till the last puny looking plant is off the market. LOL

Maybe now that it is Fall, we can get back to this again. I am glad I am not the only one! I have major medical issues (that involve flare-up & times that are fairly OK), but I was messy before that. The thing about the garden is that when I am feeling pretty good, I just do the garden. That way, it can grow on its own while I am down. One year, I tried to do both, and when "down" came along, the house got messier anyway, and there wasn't much food because I split my time trying to do both. I have kids that do what I ask pretty much (great kids!), but I have to do more fussing with my son to get there. However, he is mildly autistic--Asperger's--so just the transition of going from what he is doing to doing something else is where the struggle lies. Once his mind is on track, he gets the job done. I threatened to buy a roto-tiller, so my husband said he would dig. It took a bit to get him to dig before, but I guess he doesn't want to deal with a machine not used that often. I have always hand-dug--myself, my whole life--but with the med issues, I am not always able. As far as the house goes, I am merssy, not dirty (usually). I am a bit of a pack-rat, but it is good stuff. In the winter, sitting idle is NOT something I can do. I knit hats for babies in the hospital, pack seeds for the needy, all kinds of things to keep hands busy--even while the TV is going. So, I have bins/totes full of yarn (from hitting the sales when they are there), an entire wall shelf that goes withing a foot of the ceiling full of various beads, lots of gardening books...and here is what makes it all look so bad: we have an 850sq ft 2-bedroom house, and there are 4 of us. My husband is a carpenter, so half the one-car garage is full of extra building materials. Really, who could pass up several sheet of plywood? They were used to block stairways so that prople wouldn't use them during construction, and then unnecessary after (headed for the dumpster). We gat a bay window free and sliding glass doors. You get the picture. I do not Spring clean. I Fall clean. I makes more sense for me. I host Thanksgiving for my family, and I do a big thing on Christmas Eve. So, I Fall clean & have the holidays. During the winter, in a clean house, I do my charitable activities, read about gardening, peruse the gardening catalogs, and get ready. Then I bring out the dirt for staring seeds. The windows fill up with plants over the next few months. That can get messy. When it is time to harden off. Plants go in and out. That gets messy. Of course, I clean meanwhile. Then the muddy shoes, then the soil amendments (aka manure), then the filthy clothes. Then losing 5 pounds in the tub at night--hey, if you don't you haven't gardened! When the weather warms, I have kids in and out, as well as myself, and I cannot imagine hollering every time a dirty shoe comes inside. So my Fall clean starts the "cleanliness", and it goes downhill form there. Maybe this is TMI, but it is so great to find others who will focus more on the garden than the house. As long as my health hold up, I garden constantly. I had Lyme Disease in '06 & '08. It is rampant here (doctor's words). I am ready to go to Maine or something. They have a bit of Lyme up there. Well, it may be good for the house too. It would be a longer winter (clean house time) and a shorter summer (poop & dirt time). I do keep the meals, dishes, laundry, bathroom caught up. After that, DIY, or it will stay there. Poop on that too! Mom's need to have fun! The food is plentiful, nutricious, and delicious! Robin

Ooh, Greening, you are good, lol! Congratulations! I had to laugh when I re-read this thread. I said I had 80 pots! Pshaw nothing! *I* was a rookie then too, lol! Last winter I dragged 243 pots into my garage. The year before it was 284, so I am getting better! I have made some progress, and I've been really, really good about not buying new stuff. But yes, I do still have some of those same plants that were in pots in 2005 still in pots. What can I say? I procrastinate. Although some of these are supposed to still be in pots - they are for my patio. I think I'm down to about 150 this year. I haven't counted yet - I do that when I bring them in. And I must add that many of these pots are little - 3 or 4 inches, so it's not quite as bad as it sounds. I don't think I will ever not have anything in pots for the winter. Even if I don't count my patio plantings, I will still always have something. I just know it. I won't even attempt not to, lol. :) Dee

Yes! I was really freaked out when I first noticed it! My heart just sunk. I had worked for weeks getting the bottom on this pool perfect, just perfect. I wanted those expensive ColorLogicLEDs to look perfect when reflecting across this glassy smooth pool bottom (OK, maybe it wasn't glassy smooth, but those lights were all I could think about when I was troweling it on!) This pool bottom was really really smooth. But unfortunately I couldn't drop the liner in immediately due to the irregular pool shape. The liner had to be custom measured (using point-to-point) and custom made. It was supposed to take 2 weeks to get here, but the manufacturer ended up taking nearly 2 months!! By then the weather had turned cold. We left standing water in the pool bottom and around the pool itself. The water was freezing and thawing (both on top of, and underneath the surface) which cracked the pool bottom. We never even realized it until it was too late. However just before we drop in the liner, we are going to COMPLETELY remove those "cracked" sections with a sledge hammer, and totally replace it with a new bottom in those places. Can anyone think of anything better to do? (short of demolishing the whole thing) What would you do if this was a liner replacement? My biggest concern with the moving sections was not just to repair them, but to determine what caused them in the first place. The "Good News" was that I'm fairly certain that it was the standing water/freeze/thaw conditions that created the problem. By knowing that, I can redirect the water, let the soil dry out, and then feel confident that repairing the section will work. I'm just a simple DIYer, so I may be missing something here. That's one of the reasons that I'm posting it. Can anyone think of a better way to handle it? Would it be helpful to add rebar in those sections? (I wouldn't think so, as the rest of the pool doesn't have it.) This pool bottom seems really fragile. The directions for the installation say to only walk on it with soft bottomed shoes, don't spray water from a hose directly on it, etc. When I work with the portland cement/sand mix, I feel like I'm building a giant sandcastle! It's not at all strong like cement or even mortar. My personal feeling is that the sooner the liner is on it the better. My mistake seems to be letting Old Man Winter get here in between finishing the bottom, and dropping in that liner! Please keep the suggestions comin'!! -Renee

Did I mention we got an energy report? We saw that our bills were comparable to the past tennants 12 month history. Our utility bill states we are using about the average amount of energy compared to other homes this size in our zip code. and the energy report came from utility company? of course your bills will be comperable. consider the source of info. utility info is biased to favor utility co. same with the audits they provide...10-15% savings max as compared to 30%+ with independent evaluation. my clients save 50% on average once my recommendations are completed and work is verified & tested. without blower door & duct testing...it is just a guess as to where the house/ducts/returns leak. air sealing is the best savings. cheap to do, immediate results..long term benefit depending upon the life of the sealant (use caulk..expands contracts unlike foams) duct sealing next best savings. average homes have 30% duct loss. a bucket of mastic & a morning spent sealing ducts also has long term benefit with immeidate results. beating the heat before it enters the house trumps changing windows & doors. awnings, plantings, and solar screens. once the heat is inside..then you pay to cool it. the down side to 'average billing' is that at the end of the averaged cycle, you pay the amount you went over the average. for some people this can be a real problem. never insulate before air sealing. insulation filters air it doesn't stop it. only foam insulation stops air leakage and insulates. not great stuff... best of luck.

I just received a big order from Parks Wholesale sale and have got to get outside and plant today before it rains. This means I have to dig up about 80 irises before planting. Aint gardening grand?

I figure this rose alone will be worth the trouble.

Oh, I love Ebb Tide!! I hope it looks like the picture-make sure you share snapshots of it with us!

My DH and I just had a marathon planting day and planted all of the wsed plants-whew! We are not done yet, but that is the major bulk of what needed to be planted asap.

Count me as not done also. :) It's still June...I have plenty of time! LOL! I don't have many though and I have a 3 day weekend next weekend so I'll get finished then. It's just been really hard this year because we've been doing so much overtime and when I had a week off in May, it was cold and too wet to get much done. But everything I have planted so far is really doing well. This weekend is really cool, but it's going to warm up on Monday.

Hi with golf and planting I still have lots to do right now I'am taking a break. I have planted over 100 cally lily and over 50 dahlia this year I also have over 23 16inch pot to do a couple of annuals beds to finish but I can see the light in the tunnal almost finish. Then comes the weeding and firtilzing then cleaning of the couple of hundred of pots hmmm I don't know if there a end to this anyway i still enjoy it it will look beautiful when I'am finish happy gardening Anna

I think I can help all of you feel better about being "behind". I am not finished planting yet, and in the past 7 days, I have planted on average 250 plants per day!!! I am so not kidding, I had some major projects going on this year, including a one acre surround perennial garden, of which most plants were grown from seed indoors. I also did a 375 square foot shade garden outlining my new courtyard which contains about 500 plants, most of which I grew from seed. I still have about 200 more plants to plant out and I am calling it quits. I am usually finished planting by mid-May, so I have been feeling quite pressured this year, and the weather doesnt cooperate at all---too cold and wet in May, too freaking hot in June!

Thanks, Ellen - yes, I certainly feel better now!

I'm also still planting. Some of the annuals (Celosia, Amaranthus, Dianthus) are still tiny, because although this time I remembered to prick them out early, I then left them sitting in cell trays while I got on with the thousand or so other garden jobs. Now these plants that are supposed to be several feet high are just a few inches! Naturally all these containers dry out rapidly, and each time they dry out, the plant stops growing... Ah, maybe I've hit upon the reason why they're only a few inches tall!

We're also having a heatwave right now, and a serious drought means we have a hosepipe ban in place (probably for the next few years). So after making the half dozen or so trips up and down between greenhouse, outdoor plant area and outdoor tap, lugging two watering cans, I'm knackered and in no mood for more gardening!

It's hard to plant out such tiny specimens because they risk being shaded out by the taller plants surrounding them. Still, I try and get as much planted out as I can, and each tray of plants that I manage to get into the ground I look upon as a victory! I still don't quite see how I'll get it all done by July... and I have to admit to a sense of failure.

I was depressed thinking I'm not done, and feel better knowing I'm not alone-thanks. I have about 30 gourd seedlings waiting for me to plant today. And then there are those 800+ daylily seedlings in long trays that I hope to get in this week. I'm busy with the deadheading of lilacs, peony, phlox, etc., so I'm doing summer maintainance and still spring planting-and of course the thistle and quack grass are still popping up everywhere. I WILL NOT do any hybridizing of daylilies for fun this summer-I will not, I will not-well maybe just a couple of late doubles.

lol, ChrisÂ 800 daylily seedlings? Â IÂd be in overdrive, myself. I always find there almost isnÂt enough time to get everything done Â everyday, thereÂs something that needs to be tended to. The weeds have gotten ahead of me this year (like every year) because itÂs always raining. I havenÂt planted everything yet, because itÂs always raining. I know what youÂre saying, ornata, about that sense of failure, at timesÂ

I'm done planting annuals, but have a boatload of perennials yet to plant, and it's been in the 90's. May was cold and rainy, now June is hotter than Hades. Midwest weather drives me nuts!!!

I was done except for replanting the front porch pots when the pansies peter out (our cool spring has extended them a little longer). And then Parks Wholesale had that sale and I just got a nice big box from them. So back to planting this weekend.

But that is the last till fall...I mean it for sure....unless I see a really good sale I just can't pass up.

Not done. (Ref: "Acquiring plants" thread on WS, "NH plant swap on the NE board, and various other 'issues' I have- LOL!)

I sit at my desk daily with a to-do list a mile long, then when I get home I feel like I'm standing there not knowing where to start because I have overload.

There's a new pile of plants from the swap that need homes, and the Park's order that arrived last week, and the WSd containers that need to be potted up to at least get them off the ground and make the milk jugs go away...then I get to deal with them AGAIN after a week or so on the table I have going for the "I-don't-know-what-to-do-with-these" plants. Sigh.

There's the mailbox that never got done with the MGs, the stone wall on the public way that I wanted to plant out and haven't gotten to, and a gagillion other items on my gardening grocery list of to-do items.

Nope; I'm pretty sure I'll never be done. Sometimes I finally get all my Christmas decorations up by New Year's, though, so maybe I'll have it done by October or so.

You think? Me neither.

I keep *thinking* I'm done for the season but then come across a new nursery, or a good sale, or the neighbors are dividing their perennials, or the rabbits eat big holes into the landscaping...

A gardeners work is never done:) I don't think that I ever really stop planting here. I am always picking up plants on sale of from friends and family and trying to find spots for all of them:)

There is no such thing as "Done" when you are a gardener. The "Done" thing is a fallacy!!! There is always something to move, something new to plant, something to get or seeds to sow all through the gardening year! Even in the winter those of us that are winter sowing are busy winter sowing seeds and putting them outside! Yes a gardeners life is always full of planting!!! There is no "DONE"!!!!

i had a late start, so i've been planting impatiens and begonias all week. i have limited space, so it doesn't take as much time, but i plan to keep adding plants in as the summer goes on.

I agree with you all - there is no such thing as 'done', when it comes to gardening. I have to admit to getting a little overwhelmed at times. I think 'what have I done?', when I look around at what needs to be tended to.

Something either has to be planted, moved, tied up, weeded, staked, mulched, mowed, trimmed - I really feel in over my head sometimes. Like today... I find I'm doing one thing, but thinking about the other thing that needs to be done. I'm veering a little off topic, here, but the statement that it's never 'done' just rang so true for me. Oh, I do enjoy it all, though... I'm just about 'done' planting my annuals - lol.

Whenever I'm done I just go out and buy more. Thinking about where to shoehorn them in is more fun than weeding or deadheading: which I should be doing.

I get severely slowed down by allergies in June, so I'll definitely be planting throughout the summer. I did what I could in May, and now I'm doing pots because I can do them indoors and just go outside long enough to place them. Then I enlist my kids to help keep them watered until the pollen lets up next month.

Gardeners shouldn't have hayfever, God should make it a formal decree.

I'm not done yet either. I have some more impatiens to plant (I went impatiens crazy this year!) and just ordered some Sarracenia (american pitcher plants) so I have to plant those when they arrive.

But it sure is FUN!!!!

I was 'done' planting annuals, but yesterday I went to the nursery and got some more impatiens (just in case I have to fill in some spots here and there - ha).

I ended up planting one of those grow bags with impatiens (it was lots of fun trying to stuff those roots in there). Anyone have any luck with the grow bags? How do you water those once they get going?

Oh, one a side note - I found some browallias (!) that were just transplanted. Not very big, but I snatched up 4-4pks.

About 50 more plants, 12 trees, divide the irises and I am calling it finished for this year. I do have an excuse, however. I am gardening with a broken ankle. Wonder what excuse I will be able to come up with next year???? :)

Newskye, I can identify with the hayfever, too Â it really makes it difficult to enjoy any outdoor time Â mine dissipates mid-July, too.

Another wrench is just when the weather is nice enough to start planting, the mosquitoes, and black flies (little black biting insects) start in full force. Hayfever/mosquitoes/heat/humidity Â not a good thing!

Ok, I'm done! The weather in New Hampshire has been horrendously rainy, hail broke up all my tomatoes, we even had a tornado!!!!

We got all the perennials in and every bed is mulched, some for the first time ever, thanks to my husband taking a week off to garden with me. And the annuals - done too.

Oh, wait - forgot about the Alba Bleeding Heart on the front porch. Oops and the curly willow we found at the plant sale! (sigh)

Oh wow, you guys have made me feel so much better. My husband and I just moved to a five acre property last fall, and so this spring I have been a crazed lunatic with a thousand garden projects at once. So good to hear that I'm not the only one taking on ridiculously large undertakings -- chris_nl and ellen you have both probably got me beat!

Done? I don't think I'm EVER done. Just about the time I think I might be done I drive by a nursery and the car just turns into the parking lot, some sort of tractor beam pulls me out of the car, fuses a shopping cart to my hands and plants jump into the cart. Honest. It's not my fault. It's Triffids From Outer Space.
