Growing Alliums in Dallas`

Hey all---I am curious if anyone can advise me on trying to grow some of those lovely globe alliums in my zone.

I am a pretty good gardnener--have roses, shrubs, vines, perennials...also have done fine with daffodils and some asiatic lillies as far as bulbs go.

I see these lovely tall plants in the bulb catalogs and just wondered who had tried them.

I didn't see much on the Allium forum actually--or I didn't look hard enough.

I appreciate it guys--hope your gardens are coming along well this April!

I'm zone5 so I don't know if I can be of help, but I grow alliums and love them. They are prolific, easy to divide and non invasive.For a spring English gardden cottage look they can't be beat. I also grow the larger globemasters which are alwys a show stopper. The only problem I have with them is that ech year they get smaller and smaller. They are slow to ddevelop bulbs and when they do they are typical of the standard allium bulbs. The shape and color remain constant year to year though so I just move to them to the front where they are still lovely just not as eyepopping.

Hi, I think a lot of things make a difference in where they will grow and survive. I planted Giant Allium a couple of years ago. Last year they did beautifully. This year, they were up about 5 inches and we had a freeze that turned them to black mush. Several days ago I went out and dug them up to see what had happened. Nothing but a bunch of rotted gunk there. I think if I had mulched it good, it would have been better protected and maybe survived. I had two other type that didn't come back either. The ones that did survive were the drumstick and Chrystopherii (sp. ?) I live at an altitude of one mile high in zone 5a. I really don't know how to advise you. But I do know that I will be trying them again. Betty

That looks like a scape from a hardneck garlic. In another week, dig it up and sample it. It looks like it came from a pretty big bulb.

Garlic is very easy. About all you have to do to get quantities of it is keep the rows weeded. Rabbits can be a problem, where present, as they may mow the tops.

Yeah, I saw one of those ads with the little girl and BIG bloom too. I got a couple of the bulbs. They did not do well. The bloom was scanty and misshapened on short stems. Pitiful looking. They didn't come back the second year. I don't recall that anything was said about digging them for the winter. It could have been due to my gardening skills or it could have been bad bulbs. But I didn't try again. After I had ordered them, I read something about placing them away from any sweet smelling flowers such as roses because they had a terrible odor. they were right about that!! Even though the blooms were nothing to look at, the smell more that made up for it. I guess it's because alliums are in the same family as onions and garlic. I don't think I would waste space on them unless you have some to spare. I have not seen any of the BIG alliums around. The nearest thing to them are the Lilies of the Nile, which do well in sun and don't have to be dug. PB

They are bulbs that you can plant in the fall. I have not seen them in pots, but you never know. Might be pretty top-heavy for a pot, though.

Brent and Becky's has them listed for zones 4-8, so you should be ok in Dallas.

I am thinking about trying alliums here too. I took a look at the Southern Living garden book. According to it, the only alliums that might be difficult to grow in the lower south are aflatunense and atropurpureum. All the others listed appear to be good bets. Do post back and let us know how they work for you. I am going to order some karataviense, "Ivory Queen" come fall.
