Why can't I find these?

For the last few years I was able to get big Persian Shield plants at Home Depot or smaller ones at a local garden center. This year no one has them and so few people working at these places even know what they are. I guess I could look online but the season isn't long enough for them to get as large as I'd like. Anyone seen them, esp. in the NJ area?

you are willing to give up on the season.. the third week of may???

heck.. half of my stuff just broke dormancy last week ... in z5 MI ... and i darent plant out the annuals yet ...

if you decide to search online.. use the latin name: Strobilanthes dyerianus

you could probably have them by this time next week ...

Did you know you can over winter them inside? If you find some, then stick a couple in pots at the end of the season and bring them inside. You can take cutting from them in mid February when they start growing again, and have as many new ones as you want, plus the big ones that you over wintered.

Hi, I don't think it's a particularly common one. I wonder if there was a particular reason why you wanted this one? From the descriptions (I've never seen it) it doesn't seem too different from many. Avoid Sedum album and possibibly sedum acre but there are many others that look similar. Sedum dasyphyllum has ting fat blue green leave and pink/white flowers. That might be a good one to start with.

Since you don't mind the drive, I would humbly suggest that you visit Jungle Music in Encinitas. The variety of palms offered is overwhelming and they seem to have a good selections of sizes (liners up to boxes). If you go to their web site (www.junglemusic.net) I suggest you go to the "Check out the blog". It's a great intro to many palms that do well in CA with lots of pictures showing various stages. I've learned a lot. For the record, I live in Atlanta, GA so most of what I've purchased from Jungle Music has been shipped as 5 gallon or smaller. More cycads than palms. Always great stuff. Why can’t I find 24” gas wall ovens??

Stateside you won't find much that fits what you're looking for. 24"W wall ovens are already limited on options (30"W is the current American standard), and gas ovens are even more minimal even in the standard sizes. You'll basically have the option of something cheapy/junky, or something super expensive. If you want a gas oven, get a range - otherwise it's highly recommended to have the work done to switch over to an electric wall oven due to the lack of options.

Privately owned garden centers are often amenable to requests from customers. Ask to speak to the owner or manager and put in a request for your Persian Shield. Tell him or her that it's very popular wherever people are able to find it. It's an attention grabber when used right.

Be sure to learn about the many attributes of this plant. It really is a very versatile, beautiful plant.

Take a picture of it with you.

Did you try your local nursery? Both the ones I frequent for annuals had them last week.

Another bonus from overwintering is getting to see them bloom. I don't know whether the cooler temperatures on my mom's four season room or the different daylight schedule does it, but her Persian Shield bloomed beautifully two years running. I don't remember how far into the cold season it bloomed, but it was a wonderful surprise.

What do the blooms look like? I've never seen them.

The blooms are roundish and tubular and a delicate pale blue. The color surprised me. I guess I was expecting white or purple or even greenish. They blossom in groups of 5 or 6 in a cluster, if I'm remembering correctly. You can probably google an image--and likely prove how bad my memory is.

Yes, this plant is a winter bloomer. Never researched why, also assuming day length was the trigger. Here's some blooms on an outside plant from 1-27-13. Usually knocked to the ground by cold here, at the edge of hardiness for this plant, but that winter was so mild that this plant in a sheltered corner stayed 'up.'
