help with old daffodil ID

Many years ago in northwest Louisiana, my grandfather bought an old house. These small cup daffodils literally covered the yard. There were hundreds. I dug up black leaf bags full of them and moved them to our home in Alabama and our farm in Tennessee. They are proving to be prolific in both places.

Stats:

flower stalks 20-22" high

flowers 2 1/4" across

cup 3/4" diameter

single flower per stalk

The bulbs seem to multiply rapidly and the flowers are fragrant. I have e-mailed the photo to Old House Gardens and am hoping to hear back from them. Does anyone here recognize this variety?

I don't recognize it, was about to suggest Old House Gardens, and if Scott Kunst chooses to offer it, I'll be right there to buy it :-) It's absolutely lovely.

To me they appear to be Van Sion Daffodils, which are commonly found on old homestead sites. I have some of these I got from my family when they lived at an old house in Michigan, they were very crowed and they were just leaves so I did not know what to expect for the flowers. I also wanted to mention you do not have to necessarily wait until fall to dig some of them up, you can dig them up with foliage, even while there in bloom if your careful! The key is to leave as much dirt around the plant as possible, so you don't disturb there very delicate roots. I dug up my bulbs when the plants were in full green leaf and they bloomed a few blooms the following 1st spring afterward, and right now there loaded with even more buds then last year! Hello: It is not too late to feed them, but if they have been up for more than 3 or 4 weeks and they haven't put out a bud shoot, they are likely not going to flower this year. My first question is, how much sun does the area they are planted in get per day. A daffodil needs at least some sun for about 6-8 weeks in order to have sufficient photosynthesis to re-charge the bulb. Second question is, if it is in a sunny spot, how long did you leave the foliage on the plant after it flowered last year? If you cut off or tied up the foliage before it turned yellow and fell down to the ground, then you may not have given the plant enough time to re-charge. As to the "new" ones blooming while the "old" ones aren't, all bulbs that you buy should be ready to flower the first year because all the energy that they need to have a bloom should already be in the bulb. From then on out, though, the bulb has to re-charge itself with sunlight through its foliage. Hope this helps you "trouble-shoot" the problem, and I wish you good luck, Igwiz

Gently squeeze the bulbs. If they are soft or have a lot of give, they are too old. Throw 'em away. Having said that, even if firm and appearing healthy, bulbs that have sat out unplanted for a couple of seasons will produce very poor results, if any. The energy or growing ability stored in the bulb deteriorates with time. The tulips I'd go ahead & toss. They seldom perennialize well even when fresh and I doubt ones more than a year old will do anything. I'd find an out of the way corner of the garden and go ahead and plant the daffodils now - bulbs keep better in the ground than they do in a garage :-) Next spring you will hopefully see some signs of foliage. You can apply a little bulb fertilizer then and let them go. May (unlikely) or may not (very likely) bloom but if given proper conditions and little TLC they may come back into their own in a couple of seasons.

im looking for an older model 1980s lawnboy it has the battery located on the rear deck, the white primer , a place for the on off switch to be installed if it isnt already there, it has electric start and several breathing holes in the hood, its self propelled by folding the white handle down on top of the chrome handlebars, it can be pull started the gas tank is mounted in the hood, and some dicoloration occurs and will show where the gas tank actually is, , has a fuel cut off switch at the base, i have got to know what model this is, the wheels have the triangle pattern on them they are offset and the grass chute is right there at the front of the mower, i need some pics of different ones so i can identify which one it is someone help me please my email address is bimmerboy2102@aol.com, thank you

Could it be Sugar Bush? I was just looking at the Colorblends website and saw this and it said it is one of the oldest and best southern daff's offreed continuously by the trade.

How many years ago (1920's? 1930's? etc...) was the house bought? Sugarbush might be ruled out if the house was purchased prior to the 1950's and the daffodils were already there, since that variety is listed only as "pre-1954", hybridized by Alec Gray. The photo is similar to 'Sugarbush', though, allowing for light and growing conditions, as well as the location it was found.

I am not certain when my grandfather bought the house, but am trying to find out. While reading about Sugarbush on various websites, I find that the tallest height given is 16". Does anyone know differently? None of mine are under 20" in height, with some as tall as 24". I'd have to say most are in the 20"-22" range. This is in all 4 locations in north Alabama and southern Tennessee where we have them growing.

I have Sugarbush and it is not as lovely as yours! Also, my Sugarbush(es?) are not as tall. Hmmm, my bulbs came from a reputable nursery several years ago, but if your beautiful ones are Sugarbush, I'm starting to wonder what mine might be! I believe it is Division 7, Jonquilla, at least according to NC State Univ. On the ADS site it states for Division 7: Daffodils have small flowers with flat petals.
There are usually one to three blooms on a stem.
They are very fragrant. The foliage is narrow, reed-like.

At any rate, I'll be searching the catalogues for some like yours! Here's a picture from last year (sorry, it's not too good) as mine are not in bloom yet:

That is tulipa bakeri 'Lilac Wonder' in front which is a small tulip, to give you some idea.

I hope this is of some help and not just making it more confusing. Anyhow, lucky you!!

Grand Primo might be a candidate for your mystery Narcissus.

Maybe not Grand Primo--it's supposedly 14-16" tall. Maybe Grand Monarque (also at Old House Gardens), which comes closer in height? Only Grand Monarque looks like it has a much brighter cup.

hello all.
My mum and i have just found a daffodil in our front garden that is 33" tall! We were wondering id this was tall for a daffodil? Think it could win any 'world tallest daffodil competitions'
