Best Tulip for year after year returns?

I love tulips, but I rarely use them because they rarely come back for me year after year. I have great luck with all the rest of my perennial bulbs, and I have thousands in the yard.

I know some tulips are better perennial performers than others. Do you have any recommendations?

The old Darwins have been recommended by Becky Heath. My Pink Impressions are showing great budding this 2nd year.

Kaufmanniana for shorter. Have read the Greggiis also.

I read Triumphs are very poor at naturalizing, no matter how cold the winter.

The greggiis are really good, I have a patch of red ones that have come back for about three years or so? "Little Red Riding Hood" is a great red!

I have, I guess a Darwin type that my dad planted over 10 years ago and it still comes up and blooms. There's another of the group that always sends up foliage but never blooms, I'm sure there are multiple tulips under there.

I think the trick is that the soil during the summer needs to be BAKED, no additional watering. Tulips come from Iran/Greece/Afganistan/Kazakstan etc after all.

Last year, my bulbs were in lawless conditions. I bought a children pool and put them in it in their pots. It was easier to water them this way. I just poured the water in and they all got some. But then some rains came and completely drenched the bulbs. They were neck up to the water and they stayed that way for a long time by the time I noticed it and let the water away. So I ended up with most of the bulbs shrunk to tiny bulblets that I didn't think would even survive. Then I had to move to the new house, so I unpotted them, cut the leaves and put them in the new wine cooler I bought for this purpose to make sure that the bulbs do not freeze down. A month later I noticed that the wine cooler froze down and even killed about 10 bulbs. I returned it to the store and just bought a huge standing fridge that had the freezer part separately. I kept my bulbs in that fridge. Then I planted them up from Summer, hoping that they would still come back to me. And to my amazement: More than 50 percent FLOWERED! They shrunk, they were sitting in water, they froze down, they were in dormancy for a half a year or LONGER, and they BLOOMED! I am still floored by some of them. Now, they are out in the flower bed, fattening up. I hope they enjoy the situation. So you see, once they want to bloom, they just bloom, even if they kill themselves.

Glad I read the posts on this thread! Worms have been an issue for me also lately, different ones I'm not sure which is which. The large green guys (cabbage worms?), webworms, and a black cp with a stripe down it's back that I have no idea what is....lots of those on calendula seedlings this late spring, a few now. I've also found green inchworms on my new roman chamomile, well underneath. I would've never seen them if I hadn't gone after the slug on the plants. Being an "organic" gardener, this means I hand pick and squish these guys usually....but it's so bad I was wondering about bt. Now that I see it's only effective if they are young...what do I do? Time to spend handpicking is limited now, and the green guys are hard to spot....even with all the poop. Any suggestions? I never see the eggs....only the worms. Can bt be used as a preventative measure?

ÂIs it true that winter rye cleans the soil of destructive nematodes, or adds beneficial nematodes, can't remember which.....? **** No, not true. Ebon rye has been suggested as a cover crop that might help lower the population of pathogenic nematodes. But I have many friends, especially in CA, who have bad Root Knot Nematode problems and several in the past have done controlled experiments with Ebon rye and found little to no difference. No, it doesn't encourage beneficial nematodes. Ppod, you don't have RKN problems where you live and you know I know where you live. LOL About TMV. As Dave said the strains of tobacco grown in the US , and that's at least for the past 20 years or so, are TMV tolerant. But Turkish tobacco is not TMV tolerant. Sudzy, in any case TMV is transmitted, or was, primarily by insects and these days any transmission is manual and occurs in large commercial greenhouses. But growing in one spot every year is not going to predispose plants to TMV b'c it's not out there to worry about any more. CMV is and many folks confuse TMV with CMV b'c the two viruses can exhibit similar symptoms. Growing in one spot can predispose to a build up of foliage pathogens, but I spoke to that in a post above in this thread. Carolyn

boxerpup, I'm a little late reading this but still want to send my heartfelt sympathies and say that I love that beautiful face. What many people don't understand is that losing a well loved pet is like losing a family member. I've lost many pets over the years and I now have four boys who's ages are 14, 11 and two are 9. I see age creeping up on them every day, especially the 14 year old and it breaks my heart to think of losing them. Unfortunately that is part of loving and having pets. I would rather love and be loved by a pet and endure the hurt tho than to do without the joy and love that they bring into our lives and it sounds like C brought plenty of both into yours. C will live in your heart and your memories forever and no other dog will ever take her place as she has her own special nook in your heart belonging to her alone. I'm sure, tho, there is still room in your heart for another furbaby to make it's place one day.

I live near Dallas. The land where tulips become compost. I tossed a bunch of bulbs in my neglected compost pile. What a surprise! Several Red Ridinghood Greiggis were blooming there next spring. I also had another greiggi that is also very short and yellow return where I didn't pull the bulbs out.

I can count on clusiana "the lady tulips" returning year after year. I've had "Cynthia" for several years now and Lady Jane has returned also. Only 1 year thus far.

My mother has a patch of red and yellow emperors that's almost as old as I am. But still, with tulips you can't expect them all to bloom every year, the one which are splitting don't bloom. A normal tulip lifespan involves blooming maybe 3 years out of 10 (although for about 3 of those years they are basically invisible because they're much smaller than a mature tulip). To get them blooming every year, you have to expect that only 30% of them are going to bloom each year.

I was just going to add T. Praestans 'Unicum' which has returned for me 5+ years now...

multi-flowered and variegated. What more could you want in a tulip? (well, scent, but that's what hyacinths are for)

The Darwin Hybrids should do well as perennials in your garden.

The Species Tulips should also do well and are lovely little jewels.

I have multiple species tulips going on ten years old in my garden. Love them. Their foliage is less obtrusive as it dies too.

Species tulips such as tulipa tarda seem to keep going forever, at least mine do. My fosteriana types such as Orange Emperor last many years, as do Red Riding Hood (Greigii) and Scarlet Baby (Kaufmanniana).
