As per all the sage advice above, you have your plant living in the dark. The advice of "Bright, indirect light" is not for all parts of the country. It's a general suggestion for all points south and west, not for light starved states like New Jersey and Ohio. Here they need all the light they can get and can almost go right up against the cold glass in order to get it. Yes, the sun is low, but it's very weak, at it's weakest of the year, in fact. Very gradually, from December 21, which was the shortest day of the year and the absolute depths of winter for orchids, the days will be slightly brighter each day. In April is when you worry that the light may be getting too strong and you can pull the plant back a few inches. Notice the word "inches" and not feet.

Not all "zones" are created equal. I'm zone 7 on Long Island, NY, and all but one of my hostas are still pips and barely furling. Yet I see photos from people in zone 5 and 6 with fully leafed out hostas. I think it has to do with how steady the temperatures are. My NY zone 7 has relatively stable steady temperatures compared to a zone 7 in the middle of the country, where a week of 80 degree heat in March could get all the hostas to leaf out. The more you garden, the more you'll learn your microclimate. In my experience, the NOID "green ones" and "green and white ones" that have been around for decades tend to leaf out in my area way earlier than the new hybridized varieties. This early in the year, I wouldn't worry at all. However, if you don't see anything in a few weeks, I'd carefully dig one up. You said this is your first year in that zone, so I'm assuming its a new house, and there's always the possibility that you have some kind of vole or pest of some kind.

Updating.... I have found only 5 monarch cats...only 1 of them from my garden. The others were on the wild milkweed along the road in front of my house. I just talked to another butterfly enthusiast, Jane Kirkland of Take A Walk books, and she's found similar circumstances from Scotland and other parts of the world. For people reading who hate bugs...guess what? You got rid of the bugs, with all your pesticides, and now look what we have...no bugs. (Side rant)

Report of prostate biopsy due in a couple of days. Daughter called on Easter morning - the best Easter present. When I suggested that if I got bad news at the biopsy report ... that I'd have a great deal of work dealing with the messy house ... ... and she laughed: said that most folks, informed of limited life expectancy, would be talking of travel ... visiting family, etc., etc. ... ... and with Dad ... it was dealing with messy house, not leaving it for survivors to cope with! Which reminds me ... I've thought for some time that one of the things that I must add to the "Last wishes" folder ... ... is to write down Gardenweb's address, so son can inform folk here of Dad's mouth being closed ... finally! Fingers no longer keyboarding. ole joyfuelled ... who figures that life should be taken seriously at times ... and not too, at times ... P.S .... but one thing's for sure: no one's gonna survive it ... ... what's that you say: that they're figuring ways for folks to live pretty well forever? No kidding! That'll mean - no more kids ... no more grandkids! (of which I have none: end of the line for my branch of the family) And the world, with 7 billion or so, going on 10 ... will become so heavy ... that it'll fall out of orbit, for sure! o j
