Hanging annuals for large planters

I have four very large planters that I would like to fill this year with annuals grown from seed. In years past I have purchased plants for them and it has cost me a small fortune. This year I have decided to line the planters with plastic, fill them with soil and grow my own.

I have three that enjoy full sun - southern exposure. And one that is southern exposure but shaded by some big trees most of the day. These are HUGE planters that sit above waterfalls (2) and on brick columns on either side of the driveway.

I am thinking about morning glory because I understand that they grow from seed well and quickly. I would love some other suggestions...perhaps even some perennial ideas?

There are so many possibilities... I wouldn't feel comfortable making suggestions yet, though. What colors do you like? What kind of look do you want... Crazy busy with plants bursting out in all directions? Upright, more formal? A grouping of plants that will bloom at different times or at the same time? Interesting foliage? The combination of full sun, hot bricks, and humidity from the waterfalls sounds like good conditions for a lot of plants. Did you want the 3 sunny ones to be identical? Are you trying for a look where all 4 are similar although one is in different conditions?

Morning glories are easy from seed but are vines and usually used where there is something for them to grow on. Are you visualizing them spilling over the sides?

I'm also curious what the planters are made of and why you mention lining them with plastic?

With trees in large planters, the fine point of what to use for fertilizer is a minor problem. It is the mix you use that will cause most of the problem. Any mix will have to be replaced as the organic components disintegrate over time and exclude the needed oxygen, which will cause the roots to be unable to take up nutrients, even the best most complete available. Eventually even the best, longest lasting mix, will have to be replaced, and the roots pruned, a big job for a BIG container. I have just done two and have two more to go. Thanks! I was afraid Saran Wrap would not be sufficient and am so glad you told me before I started planning on using just the plastic wrap to cover the containers. I'm sure I can get 6-mil clear painter's dropcloth plastic somewhere. I also hadn't really considered leaving enough space in the hanging planters for when (not if - I'm trying the power of Positive Thinking) the seeds start to sprout. Some people might think planning WS now is too early. But as someone who will be new to WS, I need people like you to answer my questsions BEFORE I kill everything I try to WS. Thanks again for the information and pictures - I appreciate it.

Coconut geranium - worth putting in a hanging basket planter?

Hi there, I figured you guys would be the experts to ask. I bought a "coconut geranium" from Richters Herbs. Nice foliage scent. I was wondering about the blossoms though. I researched pictures on google images and the blooms look pretty but tiny. Despite being tiny, do they appear in any great number or does the plant just throw out a few small blossoms at a time? I am thinking of putting this plant in a hanging basket but debating if I should include at least one other annual in the pot so at least there's always something blooming. I guess it's just a new way of thinking, I'm used to annuals that bloom their heads off (but have gone to more attractive foliage annuals as well). Thanks for your input, Glen

What do you suggest I plant in this very large planter? Tree? Shrub?

@lbooras54 I would point out that you have a lot of large trees in the view of your deck. So to plant another tall tree in your planter creates a somewhat boring repetition of the same vertical shape. One of the things I like about the Mugo Pine suggestion is that the bush form of pine will offer a contrasting shape and texture to the trees in the backyard. At the same time, the plant can easily survive your winters and will stay evergreen. The shape of the Mugo Pine is quite attractive and will be a focal point for the deck, particularly if you plant two of them in different locations. From the list @gardengal48 provided, I think the Sherwood Compact variety. looks interesting.
