Ranunculus Need help planting

I've had no experience with ranunculus, but was given a handful of these bulbs which look like little bunches of bananas. Do the "banana" extensions go up or down when planting? Are these the roots or potential flowers. Help, please.

The banana extensions go down. I am no expert on this, but I was told to soak the bulbs in water for a few hours (four or five hours, in my case) and then plant the bulbs. Once soaked the bananas became really plump and it was easier to plant. The dried bulbs tend to break off more easily (I think). I planted them in small pots about two and half weeks back and I see a little bit of parsley like growth. Hope this helps.

Hey - gosh it's hard to find info on growing these little guys! I am in central MN/zone 4/5, and am trying my hand at indoor forcing some ranunculus bulbs/tubers. It's early March right now, so it's too early to put them in the ground, so I'm impatiently starting them indoors. I've followed all the planting guidelines I've read, the temps and light requirements, and I still cannot find out.... how long until these guys sprout? I'm thinking it must be different than growing them conventionally outside, as there was no chilling period and my window location must be different than in the ground. ANYONE know what my time frame might be on these ranunculus bulbs? Thanks a million! ; )

can I plant tulip/crocus/hyacinthus/freesia/ranunculus together?

When I put in freesias I just dug away an area and placed them all and then carefully covered them, no individual holes dug. Since you have different depths for your types you have, you can layer them. You hyacinth and tulip would be deeper than crocus and freesia. I'm not sure about digging any up in your area, someone else will know, but if you do dig them you wouldn't want to layer them. I would allow some space for naturlizing if it is a concern to you. You will want to plant the shorter ones in front so they can be seen compared to others blooming at the same time. I think your watering is WAY more than they need and they will rot. I water mine once a day 5am for 5 minutes in summer and less often during winter. Depends on your soil and how sun, wind etc you get also. I'm just stingy with water being in a drought. ps-good luck in keep crocus around if you've got squirrels, chicken wire placed near top of soil would help though.

Thank you for the advice. This is the first time I'm planting things and I really have zero experience. I had discussed these plants and their care with the guy at our local nursery in a lot of detail before buying them and he assured me that they can be put in the ground right away. I did dig them up yesterday and found out that my gardener had planted them very loosely in a very shallow hole in a mound of garden soil that we bought from Home Depot. I also noticed that the roots very dry which could be because the garden soil won't retain any water. So I dug a deeper hole into the ground and replanted and watered them. This morning, they seemed to be doing better and were not as droopy. I will keep an eye on them and see how it goes. And yes, probably won't buy them to put in the ground if they don't survive this time. The attached photo is from this morning. These leaves were flat on the grown and yellow yesterday. Thanks again. I really appreciate the help and knowledge that you shared.

I'm SOO upset with myself!!! I bought a load of anemone & ranunculus corms & failed to plant them late fall! I'm in central Florida & just planted them the other day & haven't a clue if they'll bloom now that it's so late! Our weather's heating up. I've tried doing some research & can only find info on planting them in the spring for cooler climates. I can't find any info on if they'll bloom or not. I could kick myself for not planting them in fall! I would've had hundreds of gorgeous blooms right now ! I'm so sick to my stomach over it. Anyone know of anybody who lives in mild climates who planted them late w/ success ? Or have any info or advice on this ? If they won't bloom for me this yr, I do need to move them to another garden & I'll have to wait until next spring :( I'm so upset, it's making me nauseous & not finding info on it isn't helping! Any help is greatly appreciated :)

What happens if you plant the bulbs with the "banana" extensions pointing up? I think I may have planted some that way... will I have to dig them up and correct them?

If you planted ranunculus upside down I would dig them and turn them over. There is not a lot of stored energy in ranunculus and they may not come up. Al

They are the weirdest looking bulbs I've ever seen. I bought them for the first time this year and was so perplexed that I ultimately planted them all sideways. I hope they can figure it out from there.

Thanks for the info-- I should be able to remember where they are planted in the yard....hopefully!! I will re-plant them right side up.
