HELP! ,gerbera with petrified crown

I have about a dozen super large mature plants that have been in the ground now for over 4 years. One of them was real slow to sprout this year. It's crown is hard as rock not rotted, but really hard. Is that a sign it needs to be seperated or has some problem or just something that happens in old age. I actually got some baby gerbera's last season from seed, that came up on their own. SO i hate to fiddle with them since they do so well year after year. However this one in particular needs some sort of help, it does have leaves comming up now, but all the others are already in bloom, so it is way behind and last year it was huge... What to do, what to do.....
