The bloom lasts a long time, maybe up to 2 weeks. They are pretty easy to grow (even for me, who kills a lot of plants). The foliage does die back in winter, usually.

Yep, they are easy, but honstly, I would go for the Scadoxus multiflorus v. Katherinae. This variant is much larger (leaves and bulbs), the flower is taller (height above the soil) and larger in diameter and it is virtually evergreen!!! This one is not offered anywhere near as often and you will pay a bit more for it, but all-in-all a much nicer plant :o) Dan

If you're going to use this as a patio plant you will need a large container - about what you'd use for an Alocasia. They have long and meaty roots. (Nothing under two gallons once they've started to grow.)

They look innocent when little ;-). A 4" pot seems plenty...until the weather warms up. They need a free-draining soil and good indirect/dappled light. A bit like Clivias.

I've grown them for about 5 years now. I love them. They are very easy, takes a while before they come up, so be patient. I bring them inside for winter on a windowsill until the leaves die back. (about Dec/Jan). And then I take them downstairs to rest in the dark. Come Spring, I put them outside in dappled sun and start watering. They've come up and bloomed every time! I keep one bulb per 2 gallon pot, don't crowd them with other plants.

I just bought a few of these bulbs last year again and have heard endless stories of difficulties getting them to rebloom. What is the most common reason for lack of rebloom? Improper watering? Lack of dormancy? Temperature? Repotting? Something else? All of the above?

Hard to say, but as others have mentioned they are incredibly easy. Pot them just barely below the surface in a rich, well-drained mix, keep them watered in the summer, feed often and then when they yellow toss them in the basement and forget about them.....they will typically start to grow on their own with absolutely no water in the spring when they are ready. My Scadoxus puniceus are breaking dormancy now for example as are a few of my common Scadoxus multiflorus :o) Dan

I placed mine on the highest shelf in the greenhouse and have withheld water since autumn. Months later, one is just now turning yellow, the other is still tripping right along, green as can be. I thought the high humidity in the greenhouse may be the culprit, but a friend who grows hers in her home repeatedly experienced the same thing. Suggestions welcome - would it be wisest to just keep them dry until they naturally die down and start up again?

My standard form go dormant very easily. My ssp. Katherinae are totally evergreen except sometimes a very brief spell when they lose one set of leaves before the next ones grow....which one do you have? They are so odifferent it would be hard to confuse them if you have seen both :o) Dan

I bought the bulbs from different sources, and one was labeled just Haemanthus, the other Scadoxis multiflorus katherinae. They appear identical and both bloomed in August and September of last year.
