Advice re: how to keep young tree growing in specific direction

This is not really a bonsai matter but I figure bonsai enthusiasts know more about how to make a tree grow the way you "want" it to grow than anyone else.

I have this Morten Bay Chestnut tree that I grew from a seed. It is about a year old now and about 3 feet tall. The wind blew it over last night and broke the tip of the crown off. Thus far the little tree has grown straight up with no branching. I had hoped to keep it going in this direction with the intent of growing it like a ficus tree. Now that the tip has been broken, must it branch out or is there some way that I can keep it growing vertically?

I'm really heartbroken. I've petted and pampered the little guy so. Also, please accept my apology if I've posted here inappropriately.
