My air layer 'took'...Need some detailed info.

Well, my Acer Palmatum air layer "took." I can see roots all around inside the plastic. Ringed the bark, put on rooting hormone, moss and wrapped. Used hypodermic to keep wet.

Right now the roots are very large in diameter and about inch to 1 1/2" in length.

The trunk at the layer is 3/8 "

1. How long til I should pot in soil?

2. Regular bonsai soil?

3. Pot WITH the sphagnum or remove the sphagnum before potting?

4. Wire tree into pot?

5. Prune after potting?

6. Any site requirements?

7. How far below roots should old wood be cut?

8. Anything I haven't asked but should?

Hi Tia,

There must be enough roots in the pot/bog that the roots are growing in to support the top portion of the tree which you are severing from the trunk. This may be hard to judge if your new to bonsai and/or new to airlayers, so I suggest that even in your nice zone 9 climate (I am a chilly zone 5 and have much zone envy! :) that you still wait at least another 1 1/2-2 months. Its always safe to cut the off-spring from the parent when the bag/pot is FULL of roots. Right now they may just be visible because roots naturally grow outward, so they hit the side of the bag or pot and grow down (or up sometimes). I am sure that behind those roots is a lot of soil that needs to be filled with roots before you make the cut.

You gotta have lots of patience with airlayers...its almost impossible (with excpetions of course!) to wait too long, but very easy to kill the new tree and jump on it too quick.

I airlayer about 12-15 trees minimum a year. I am airlayering a trident with a 8 inch trunk...it already has one year under its belt, but not enough roots. After this season, in the fall, I will severe the tree from the parent.

Matt again...I didn't answer any of your specific questions because I don't think your at the point with your airlayer yet. Better safe than sorry.

When you cut the new plant away, then we can go over those specific questions..until then my advice would be to just water and the let the tree grow...foilage growth means root development, so don't prune any of the branches or shoots above the airlayer.

I can see that not only am I unable to spell Citation correctly, my wordsmithery, at least in terms of building a mental picture, stinks. You deciphered enough of the post to understand some of what I'm contemplating: - I am definitely leaving this stock in ground with three to four apricots bark grafted onto four of the larger branches. It's what I do or don't do with the remaining plethora of sturdy branches coming off of the 18" of trunk that led to my initial post. I hate to waste 'em when I've got so many scions to graft. I can always buy stone fruit rootstock (not Citation, however, which grows well here) but if I can better use what I have growing in my own orchard, why not? - I would like to air layer at least 10 remaining largish branches and eventually (probably next spring if the singular estimate I've located of 4-6 months to root a peach branch is accurate) plant them in my orchard. - Some of the largish branches I am going to air layer have smaller side branches that are large enough in their own right to graft to, so I'm wondering if I should try to get a head start by grafting scions to those side branches. There needs to be a canopy above the air layer to provide the nutrition and necessary chemistry to the site where you want roots, so I can't take too much canopy away while grafting scions, but I'm thinking I can sacrifice a small side branch (keep in mind that all 10 of the branches I'm considering air layering are from 6'- 8' tall with multiple side branches of their own) from the main air-layer branch without harming the potential for success...assuming, of course, that I can get the Citation to successfully send roots out, which was actually the poorly stated main thrust of my initial post - has anybody tried air layering a stone fruit or stone fruit rootstock? As for rooting cuttings from the Citation, everything I've read claims that it's nearly impossible to root stone fruit cuttings, so I really never considered that approach. If you know different, Ace, do tell.

cousinfloyd,yes kiwis will layer but they take a few months to do so.I find the kolomitka will root with no root hormone but the arguta benefit from a little IBA hormone.I usually bend a cane to the ground and put a rock on it.Grapes root well with no root hormone as do raspberries and blackberries and as mentioned above goose berries and currants.They say mulberry root well also...I am doing it right now and I will let you know how well it works. Hi, Need2SeeGreen! At first I did not understand your question, but I've realized now that I may have used a confusing term to refer to the part of the plant I meant. As I understand it, a Terminal Bud Scar is a scar left by side buds that have fallen after the main one continues to form a branch. After this, what you end up with should look like the diagram. Please notice that a terminal bud is different to a terminal bud scar, you want to find a Terminal Bud Scar. Other terms that I found for this are "growth rings" or "annular rings" but looking this up brings up mostly results of the rings formed by a tree's bark and from which you can tell it's age... which we do not care for much at the moment. There doesn't seem to be much of a solid term to refer to it, so I found TBS the most appliable. TBS can be appreciated as several "stripes" or "bands" that ,in roses, are usually located where an older cane branches out into newer stems, usually, every one of those has their own set of growth rings/TBS right where it is attached to the older cane. The way you describe air-layering has possibilities of working, but when you do it like that you're just getting the peat to make contact with maybe two or tree nodes, a TBS is actually a lot of nodes squirmed together, every node anywhere in the plant is capable of developing "callus" which is the undifferentiated tissue that can turn to roots if the surrounding environment is in fact, appropriate for roots (damp, dark, and not too cold nor too hot). By using a TBS instead of a single or a couple nodes, you have more chances of getting a node to form callus, since there are many more nodes in that area. I hope to have answered your question, if not, please rephrase it and I'd be happy to help you. And yes! Midnight Blue is not only pretty to the eyes, the scent is really something! It is usually described as clove, but I and several other people I have shown it to think it is a lot like agua de jamaica, (which in some recipes actually has clove in it, but well, there's more to it). Seeingreen, I really wish it was like that year round, on the hotter months it will open to a more reddish, wine color, but at least the great scent is still there.

PW - Thanks for the kind words! also PPE - I received your recent message. I've been very busy with spring pruning/ repotting, which is why I haven't yet expressed my gratitude, but I will. Thank you - I was moved! Is there any downside to starting the layer via ringing method up to a year before I plan to prune + pot the propagule? There is no question things will move along much faster if the layering takes place with the plant outdoors, but you can start the layer a month or so before you expect to move it outdoors, which can be done A) when nights are reliably above 55*F, or B) by moving the plant in and out as temperatures allow (should be above 55*). Is it okay to keep it on over the winter? It depends on where the layer is located on the plant. Since you'll be cutting through the phloem tissue, you'll be cutting off flow of photosynthate from all foliage distal to the layer to roots. So, if the layer is on the main stem proximal to all foliage, there is a very good chance that the plant's root system could die; however, if you are layering the main stem distal to other branches on the stem, it wouldn't be a problem. It's best to start preparing for the layer in early to mid-spring and plan on separating the layer in mid to late summer. Faster is better because it decreases the probability of a fungal pathogen gumming up the plumbing before new roots have an opportunity to form a connection to the propagule's existing vasculature. Does layering on the main stem of a plant have any effect on the growth rate above? Yes. How much, depends on what fraction of the flow of photosynthate (food) is being cut off by the layer. If you have 10 branches below the layer on a main stem, it won't have much impact on growth rate. If you are air layering the main stem at a point proximal to all, the effect on growth rate would be greater. In any case, the reduction in growth rate should be temporal; this, because the layer also blocks the polar flow of auxin (it moves from shoots to roots only). With the flow of auxin reduced to almost nil, auxin's inhibitory effect on new lateral branching will be almost entirely eliminated (in apically dominant plants), so foliage on the new branches will start to provide a net return on energy outlay when the first of the new leaves are about 75% mature. Hi Larry,

WOW...I really feel stupid that I thought your name was TIA, my mistake, please accept my apology! I am a high school teacher and have had students named 'Tia' so I just figured...anyhow,

I also like to take the conservative approach due to past mistakes I have made with airlayers and bonsai in general. If the bag is full of roots, I am sure you can cut, but my advice is still to let the tree grow for another month or two. Of course, I also no know nothing about the growing habits of california and bonsai there.
