Would you be interested in Mertensia virginica?

I thought I did understand your posting and said that PJPII is the white HT rose I would try even in a less than ideal sun/shade situation. It is such a vigorous and healthy and beautiful rose I think it would be okay in your situation. Like I said in the first post, one of my plants is in a more shaded spot and depending on the time of year gets 8 or less hours per day of sun. The rest of the day is in very heavy shade. It still does just as well as the PJPII rose I have in a much sunnier location. And, if it's perfume you are wanting PJPII has enough for two roses so that is not an issue with it. Since it is a shadier spot, you might consider just a LITTLE extra fertilizer on the roses planted there. I would use a mild liquid fertilizer like SuperThrive or Monty's Joy Juice which won't burn your roses roots--at least it never has harmed any of my 300 roses. And I use alot of Superthrive many times per year when I fertilize with my EZ-Flo fertilizer injector connected to each beds drip irrigation system. I count out one full teaspoon of SuperThrive per bush in that bed and put it in the injector bottle along with some other fertilizers and supplements which make up my John's Jungle Juice personal fertilizer recipe. For me and a few other rosarians who have asked me for the recipe really like the results when using the Jungle Juice on their roses. My sister also grows roses in Dallas, TX and she gave it the Jungle Juice name, LOL....and she uses it alot as well. John I have an area where just by happenstance I planted several very fragrant roses including PJPII. I love to just go sit there and relax, read, or whatever as the rose fragrance is strong and divine right there. John

The Western Garden Book has a section of windy plants. It's almost always breezy here and all mine seem to be fine but are in full sun. Some red or pinkish flowering I have: Weeping bottle brush Dwarf bottle brush Calliandra Salvia greggii Cape Mallow Escallonia, pink princess Heuchera purple palace is close to burgandy but depending on when the 4 hrs of sun it might survive. Dwarf crepe mrytle Some Manzanita Barberry Leptospermum tea tree Heavenly bamboo Pyracantha firethorn Geraniums Most I have listed will do better with more sun though.

Petunias have been the toughest for me as far as annuals go. We get wicked west winds (can be very cold or very drying) in the spring and fall and my petunias have always held up well. My Ashleaf Spirea is out by itself in the elements and does well in the wind. I plan on building my garden fence (plan being the operative word here! LOL!) with upright planks to create a wind break. I killed my bean seedlings I had started inside this spring in a couple hours in the wind. Ya live and ya learn I guess... Just a note about irises...mine are all surviving and finally starting to bloom, but they were very slow starting this spring in the cold winds. They just sat there for weeks only a couple inches above ground. I'm blaming the wind anyhoo! How about some prairie specials like monardas or rudbeckias? Maybe check out some catalogues from Alberta or Sask. Maltese Cross get tall but they have strong stems. Toots (Good luck and keep us posted! You have my full empathy!)
