As far as the F. tea goes - don't put it outside and inside and out again, especially as the weather is becoming a bit unstable now - just leave it indoors. It is definitely not a beginner tree and if you can find a local bonsai club to talk to it would be a big help in terms of knowing what it is planted in - "some type of soil" doesn't help much but can matter very much to the tree's survival. You should never 'listen' to the care tags that are stuck on plants - 99% of the time they are literally worse than useless and store clerks are highly unlikely to be any better when it comes to anything more than house plants. No trees should be watered by immersion (standing pots in a sink full of water) but from above, slowly, like rain until it comes out the drain holes, but how often you water depends very much on what the mix is, as well as knowing how to gauge dryness. In any case, wait til the top half to one inch of the mix (which I'll presume is potting soil, made up mostly of peat moss, the scourge of bonsai for it's lack of fast drainage) and then water as above - your tree cannot ever wait 10 days between times - if it's still alive by now. Keep it in the brightest available light you have (they are normally grown 6 inches under high wattage fluorescents for 16 hours a day on timers). A crucial part of keeping F. teas is humidity - lots of it, but don't spray it as that can damage the tree and is a waste of time in any case. Do use a wide (foliage spanning) tray with a 1" rim, fill it with water. Sit the pot on pebbles in the tray to keep it from ever touching the water, so roots won't rot which will happen if water is allowed to wick back into the pot. And do try to find a club to help as your tree will need it.

To be quite honest I am one of the lucky few who have unlimited planting potential. My parents have 5 acres and my grandfather has over 200 (soMn), which I'm sure I will be able to buy a bit from cheap him once he dies (pushin 90). I bought 4 Serbian Spruce and 4 Ponderosa Pine from arborday.org, I guess the big question is where to plant them to protect them from the vicious wind. Last spring, we had 3 or four spouts of 3 day... blasting. Wind 2-50 miles an hour ALL DAY and ALL NIGHT. They talk about PTSD from warfare. Honestly, you don't know PTSD until you go through great plains wind. Pineresin: What do you mean by a weed seedling? I'm almost sure it is Thuja or Abies (it has the very distinctive wing). Also, I did not realize that trees could "merge" their roots (like a parasitic albino). If I could manage to grow an albino i daresay it would be the best conifer garden around my town. My uncle who lives across the road runs a "Christmas Tree Nursery". His choice of species is extremely dull. At least I have an unlimited supply of Spruce and Fir, and P. Strobus.

Faron - since your DW and DD don't want to stay at 4S, take a look at The Hudson Hotel. I think it may definitely peak the interest of your DW & DD. It is a very happening, chic place. A place where you are apt to run into a celebrity or two during your stay. The Hudson has been used for more than a few movies as well as an episode of the S&ATC HBO series and Gossip Girl. While they do not advertise, the hotel is always full. Only in the middle of the hot summer when everyone on the island of Manhattan has escaped to the Hamptons will you find an available room at the last minute. I think it may be just the place to celebrate a 21st birthday in style. Anyhoo, I am attaching a link. Check it out with your DW. It is a bit pricey, but I try to get there at least once a year. I have nothing to do with The Hudson, make no money by endorsing them, just an obsession to go back as often as I can do so. In fact, after looking at their website, I do think my own DD's 21st might be celebrated there. I think the entire vibe of The Hudson is perfect for celebrating a 21st birthday. The Hudson is situated directly across the street from the Time Warner Center, which houses the Shops at Columbus Circle, and a short walk from Central Park. You could walk down W. 58th and not even know that it is a hotel unless you've had the good fortune of a stay. However, behind the long neon light and arborvitae standing in urns, lies a gem!
