Think I need a crane?

Hello to everyone!

Last week I went to a concrete mfg. to check out fountains for the front yard. Sooo, while I was there of course I found a million other things that I couldn't live with out.

(know the feeling?) Anyway,I bought 2 huge gargoyles that I just fell in love with. They are beautiful,and as I said they are HUGE! They each weigh over 500 pounds. Now my problem is... I want to put them on either side of my front steps, the steps are wide enough for them and on either side of the actual steps there are 3 teirs which right now I have concrete pots on. And of course I want to put them on the top teir.

How do I get them up there? Do I need a crane? a fork lift? 5 or 6 weight lifters? Does any one have any ideas?

They are to be delivered on Thursday and the delivery man said he can only move them off the truck, he can't place them where I want them.

So if y'all have any ideas I sure would appreciate them.

There are various kinds of dollies, and I know the men who moved in my cast iron tub used one they called an appliance dolly. They even brought it up two steps. Why not check with an equipment rental place to get any help they can offer and maybe rent something. You want to be sure to use the right equipment so you don't break the gargoyles or yourself!

I would say you will need at least a couple strong people to help. Maybe if you had the proper dolly and some cash to offer, the guys on the truck would help.

Golly, I can't wait to see a pic of them in place! How tall and wide are they, I love gargoyles, have a couple of tiny ones.

I, too, understand about the American Girl thing. My daughter has a trunk of beautiful clothes for her AG dolls, all purchased from her grandmother. I will *never* be the one to give any of this away or she will be posting one day about how she can't forgive ME! As for getting rid of husband's stuff...this is sort of along the same lines. My husband loves car races and has a favorite tee shirt he wears only when he attends a race. It's sponsored by Marlboro. Well, one day a telemarketer called and I picked up the phone (before caller I.D.!) and they wanted to do a survey on what kinds of cigarettes my husband smokes. Thoroughly disgusted, I exclaimed, "My husband has NEVER smoked." End of discussion. I was so proud of the fact that I ended THOSE phone calls. Awhile later my husband wondered why Marlboro wasn't sending him free racing tee-shirts and stuff anymore. Somehow we got on the conversation about that phone call and how I couldn't believe they thought he smoked. My husband looked at me with this incredulous look and said, "You didn't tell them I don't smoke, did you?" Yep. He was so upset and STILL is. Now they won't send him anything because they know the truth and he is still mad about it! So he has that one racing shirt that has little holes starting in the neckline but he refuses to part with it. And I definitely will *not* be the one to give away, considering I'm already in the doghouse about the other stuff! Sheryl

I will try to answer questions. I don't know our GC's rationale and that's a good point that I should just ask him to explain his thinking. I doubt he is thinking resale as we have very clear with him that we intend to live in this house for the long term. (And the neighborhood defintiely does not call for huge "professional" gas ranges.) The capture point is a good one. The counter is that it's a small old kitchen. A big hood would dominate unreasonably, IMO. And I'm tall enough to bump my head on it too. So I think the slide out is a decent compromise. We have a gas furnace that is located in the attic. I doubt it has it's own mua, though the attic is also leaky. We have a gas tankless water heater located on the exterior of the house. And we do have a wood burning fireplace--currently never used, but with very long range tentative plans to convert it to gas and use it. The kitchen will have multiple operable windows (one of my main goals for this remodel is windows I can open in the kitchen). Thanks everyone!

Is there any way you can post a photo or photos of the plant? Passionfruit are normally pretty crazy growers. From what I have read (and limited experience this last year) they can normally take a bit of pruning.

I have an old Whirlpool refrigerator that is at over 32 years old. It's the basement fridge now. Bought it second hand around 30 years ago. I have had to repair the ice-maker once (new timer motor) and did replace the entire icemaker once about 10 years ago. Replaced the condenser fan last year when it got dodgy. Only cost has been for parts--less than $100 total during the 30 years--I've made all the repairs myself. Have never hooked up the ice-maker in the upstairs fridge. Rather have icemaker leaks in the basement on the concrete slab so I take the empty icemaker tray to the basement and dump the basement fridge ice into it.

If you can get them on a long inclined plane (a couple of 2 X 12s, maybe)and if you have something at the top to anchor to, you can pull them up with a come-along. This is a ratcheting device with a cable. There are also ratcheting devices made out of nylon(?) they use to secure loads on large trucks. Whatever you use make sure there are plenty of guys around to at least keep them steady so they don't topple over and bust.

Thank you Socks12345 and Wheatwack for the help, I think I will try to pay the delivery man to place them if he will.
I am sure he has to have a fork lift or something like it on the truck, how else would he be able to get it all off the truck? But if he refuses I guess I will have to use one of your suggestions.
Bigack, they are each about 36 inches across from the tips of the wings and they are about 42 inches tall.
I have a big Victorian house and I just thought they would be really cool sitting up there watching over everything.
Altho, I live in a very small town and I'm not quite sure what everyone else will think about them but then again as long as I like them it doesn't matter what any one else thinks. Right?

If you do end up having to rent a dolly, be sure to get the heavy one with the built-in straps.

How'd it go? Saw your garden pics today on web shots - didn't see the new guys. I love gargoyles too. I have a couple of rubber ones from Tarje. Hope you did OK!

All great suggestions.
I can vouch for the ease of the incline plane after using some 2X10s for a track and cut up sectons of 1" dowels for rollers.......moved a 7 person hot tub (sans H2O of course) to a new location by myself.
...You might also check for who moves pianos in your area. We've bought and sold several and used the same couple of fellows. Those guys use a complex strap arrangememt and 2 of them moved a concert grand up/down stairs. Astonishing.
We also have an old victorian and added a small gargoyle to one of the peaks and others are on our wish list...well, someday. Good Luck, Will
