I looked up more on Roundup Plus - I didn't realixe there are so many different formulations. Maybe what jBaker used was "Roundup Concentrate Plus" which adds 0.73% diquat dibromide to cause faster burn down or the weed. Based on the following, I personally wouldn't worry about it. It bonds so strongly to soil that plants don't absorb it and it will not wash away or breakdown. Those passionate about organics will read this differently, but you wouldn't have bought the product if you were passionately organic. I expect those who view all non-organics as poisons would want to scrape off the top inch of soil that might be contaminated and throw it away, as it will never go away otherwise. Here's some info on diquat dibromide: ENVIRONMENTAL FATE Breakdown of Chemical in Soil and Groundwater When diquat dibromide comes in contact with soil, it becomes strongly adsorbed to clay particles or organic matter in the soil for long periods of time (Koc - 100,000 g/ml). The strong chemical bonds formed by diquat adsorption to soil particles make the herbicide biologically and chemically inactive. That is, in certain soils it is unlikely to be: carried away, or leached, by water seeping through the soil; taken up by plants; broken down by microbes in the soil in a process called microbial degradation; or broken down by sunlight (photochemical degradation). Traces, or residues, of diquat have been found to persist in soil for many years with very little degradation (8, 21, 32, 36, 40). Soil capacity for adsorption of diquat is so high in comparison to the rates at which it is applied that there is little possibility that leaching or groundwater contamination will occur. Field and laboratory tests show that diquat usually remains in the top inch of soil for long periods of time after it is applied (31, 32). However, there is also evidence that diquat has the ability to eventually use up, or saturate, all the available adsorption sites on soil clay particles. Groundwater quality can be affected if soil adsorption sites become totally saturated because water moving down through the soil can carry any non adsorbed herbicide into the groundwater. More research is needed for a better understanding of the potential effects on groundwater of long- term, repeated use of diquat. Many roses sold in the US are grafted onto another rose used as rootstock. The rose most commonly used is Dr. Huey, which is a once-blooming (in the spring), dark red, climber. I think your climber is Dr. Huey. It blooms on last year's growth, when you "cut back those tips", there went this year's blooms, you won't get any this year. I think your Mr. Lincoln is "suckering", which is the term we use when Dr. Huey starts to grow. You can tell because Huey's canes are a lot thinner than Mr. Lincoln's, and grow fast. If Dr. Huey's canes are allowed to grow a lot, the grafted variety, Mr. Lincoln, weakens, and you end up with an entire plant of Dr. Huey. If you regularly cut back this plant in the spring, you've cut off the part that will bloom this year. You can try to dig down and find the start of the Dr. Huey canes and rip them off. I agree with Len511, I think the plant was too dry when it was sprayed. The first and third photos definitely look like spray burn to me. The second photo could be a fungal disease, could just be old leaves dying off (if they were at the bottom of the plant). I would water them well and leave them for a week. You may need a fungicide. I once put a broccoli seedling on my railing and went to gather some stuff up before I went outside to plant it. I came back to find my sweet little girl cat (right now purring in my lap) helping herself to a nice fresh salad. Grr! Cats like broccoli?? Most humans don't like broccoli, and cats are carnivores! I took the seedling back up to put it under lights where it could grow another leaf or two before I planted it. It's doing fine, actually. So's the cat. I did not kill her. She's too cute. I just yelled at her. My spare room is a cat-free zone. That's where my quilting, my plants, my crocheting, and all those other delicate items stay, and the cats aren't allowed in. My thoughts and sympathies re: the Virginia Tech shootings. I have a similar back yard. I'm from Colorado.

I think Ashley has zeroed in on the essence of the issue: an opportunity to teach a lesson about 'hearsay', or 'gossip', as opposed to eavesdropping. In reading all the responses that go back & forth on trying to determine exactly what constitutes 'eavesdropping' or who should be blamed, I agree that it's a very ambiguous issue. We all, as fully grown adults, basically 'know' when we're straining to overhear something, and even if it's technically 'wrong', we all know we *sometimes* do it anyway. Or we *have* done it, at least once, even as fully-grown adults. So it's really hard to guarantee that you will be able to do anything to 100% fully prevent a kid from listening in... especially if you have a conversation where you know he's around and could possibly walk in at any second or perhaps overhear. So I agree that in Ceph's case, it wasn't really anyone's fault ---neither Ceph for not fully realizing at that moment how utterly fascinating & tantalizing adult discussions can be to a kid or A____ for being a curious kid--- but that adults should be a bit more careful, and kids should have it explained to them that they may at times overhear things out of context that they are best not to repeat because they can accidentally distort the truth and end up really hurting someone without meaning to. And that they wouldn't like it one little bit if the tables were turned and it happened to them! Maybe make up a hypothetical scenario, using some humorously exaggerated details, wherein A_____ becomes the unfortunate victim of an unchecked rumor spread by mis-heard hearsay. Like for example: "A_____, let's say after I dropped you off one morning at school I *just so happened* to overhear some very cute girls saying 'A____ looks like such a STEAMBOAT in his red-and-white sweater!" And then what if I told some other kids, and soon everyone at school thought that? Then what if I much later found out that those girls had REALLY said "A_____ looks like such a DREAMBOAT in his red-and-white sweater!"? Wouldn't YOU prefer that I'd made sure I'd checked with the girls before I told a bunch of other people that you resemble a big, slow, square-ish BOAT?" So that he gets the point but in a non-harsh way and you both can giggle about it at the end.
