Direct sow annuals for a new rose bed?

I wandered over here for ideas, and thought I'd ask for help. I have a new big rose bed this year (about 50 roses or so), and right now all the roses are about a foot tall with huge gaps in between. I really want to try some annuals this year that will give the bed some color, since I'm not expecting much out of the roses this year.

Does anyone have suggestions for easy to grow, direct sow annuals that won't compete with the roses, and can be sown right on top of mulch? Good for cutting would be nice, but the main goal is easy color. Like, I said, it's a huge bed, and the weeds already have a huge head start on me.

TIA,

Joy
