Indoor Mexican Sunflower problems, any help?

hey, I have been growing this mexican sunflower since mid-november, and has been doing great up until about 5 days ago when this yellowing/browning (see link) started happening to middle aged leaves.

I am guessing a magnesium deficiency from what i have read, but i am pretty new to growing, so this guess isnt exactly educated :) thats why I'm here.

any help / ideas on what could be causing this appreciated.

Yes. It is meant to be grown outdoors now. It needs sun, basically.

no i meant specifically... i dont think the light is a problem, i am also growing many other 'outdoor' plants, E.g. cayenne peppers, rosemary, basil(3 types), morning glory and oregano in the same place all are thriving but the sunflowers.

currently i have then in 1 gallon pots with pro-mix @ approx 7 weeks of age, 18hrs of HID light/day,avg day temp is 19C, and i am keeping the substrate on the lean/moist side.

any more suggestions?

Yep. Problem here as well. Same location, nothing different this year except for more rain, but definitely not a factor. Temps have been mildly cool since June. I have one large one that I did cut back a few times in the early summer. Now it's ten feet tall. Has anyone here grown the dwarf mexican sunflower "Fiesta del sol" or "Goldfinger"? The catalogs say it's about 30" tall so I would guess here in Florida we should add another 10" to the height. BUT, does the dwarf retain the butterfly attraction of the regular MS. Is it more attractive in the garden foliage-wise? I've read suggestions that the standard is gangly and coarse and should be planted at the back of the bed with a more attractive plant in front. After having participated in tagging monarchs, I'm trying to add more butterfly plants to the garden. - June

I just read your link.. Casa Lester, I hope you are coming to the fall swap.I would love to get Tithonia seeds/ seeds heads / plants.. whatever you have at that time... :-)) I will take as many seeds you can spare. I hope I can bring some plant//seeds you would like to have. If not , I always can bring good food!! :-)) So this would be a great addition to my garden. In another thread, I mentioned that i am going to start planting more flowers for pollinators and butterflies... Any other seeds u think that are easy to grow and come back or are perennial are also welcome.

Thanks for the info, briaustex! Funny, I just finished reading through your Few photos from the backyard thread and thought, "Huh! What a coincidence: a conversation about tithonia!" :) I have a couple of spots in between three fairly sturdy Silverado sages, so maybe they'll serve as both windbreak and prop. I'll also plant a couple close together so they can buddy up. (Of course, if anything like Harvey comes through again -- perish the thought! -- all bets are off.)

Perhaps it does need a bit of food, now. Have you fed it lately? I still think that it needs natural light and also perhaps to be kept drier. They like moisture when very young, but most of those types of flowers appreciate some dry soil, too.

ok well i figured out what the problem was... i should have transplanted them into 3 gal. pots ohh maybe 2 weeks ago... they are totally root bound. :(

ohh well , live and learn. i guess i shouldnt expect everything to go perfect for my first time growing anyhow.

hopflower, did you mean that you never would have guessed that this was Lain's first time growing these? Because I was thinking the same thing!

Not exactly. I meant that I would never have guessed that they needed to be potted up to the next size; but I usually grow mine outside anyway and did not know how large the plants really are. It is hard to tell from the picture. Mexican sunflowers ususally grow like weeds with very little.
