Good quality countertop microwave ovens?

I purchased a new Toshiba microwave a few months ago and it works well for heating food, but is poor quality.

It doesn’t sit flush on the counter and it slides when you open or close the door. These are common complaints in Amazon reviews. I put a rubber pads and a folded paper towel under it to “solve” these issues to avoid the hassle of shipping it back.

Then, within several weeks, the most frequently used touch pad spots are wearing down. The plastic touchpad is cracking and making it feel like there is crusted food stuck on it, but it’s just the feel of the worn plastic.

This is considered cosmetic for warranty purposes since it still functions.

I want to just get rid of it now and replace it with something that’s better built.

I still want a 1200 watt inverter microwave, but one with high build quality.

I also want backlit keys so I can see what buttons I’m touching without needing to turn up the kitchen lighting.

Recommendations?

i haven't been microwave shopping lately but I don't think you will find back lit buttons to be common if available at all. I have heard the Sharp light commercial use models are durable.

I have seen an OTR with backlit buttons. So, I thought maybe a countertop model might also have it.

I thought there was a countertop model by some brand where the touchpad lights up for a little while after you open the door. So, you can see the touchpad light up right after you put something in the microwave, but it doesn’t stay lit up 24/7.

I can do without backlit buttons if the keypad is high contrast and very legible in medium to low lighting. Maybe white buttons with black lettering might work well enough without backlighting.

The Toshiba‘s dark touchpad with grey lettering needs bright kitchen lighting to see what you’re touching. Very annoying.

The dark screen look looks sleek and modern, but it’s not practical. It’s so dim that it looks like it’s supposed to light up, but it doesn’t.

wekick, thanks for your post. I mostly bake and rarely cook meat. When I first heard about convection, it sounded like a good idea if you have a sheet of cookies on all three oven racks, or, I guess, anything on multiple racks. The heat circulation should lead to more even cooking. I'm not certain about the effect of the circulating air which makes it difficult to determine if convection would be good. For example, why is it not good for things which need to rise? I bake bread every week, sometimes in the big oven, sometimes in the Breville. In the the Breville I have baked it with and without convection and it seems fine either way. I would, though, like to understand more about convection and what it can do for me. One reason I wanted to keep the countertop - a 13 x 9 pan of blondies in the Breville comes out evenly browned and evenly cooked. In the Jenn-Air, it is unevenly browned, sunken in the middle and puffy around the edges. The Jenn-Air in general has been a nightmare with very unreliable oven temperature (and a very long list of other problems). I would hope my yet-to-be installed new DCS would perform much better.

Thanks flwrs! And Cj - Knowing you both had success with using the roaster is reassuring. I use a brown sugar and bourbon glaze and I donÃ¯Â¿Â½t think anyone will notice the ham isnÃ¯Â¿Â½t very brown. My biggest worry is that the ham is only 8 pounds and might get too dry. I promise to use my electronic thermometer. Fori, I donÃ¯Â¿Â½t think I could talk my DH into grilling. Our current forecast is: "Snow beginning around midnight tonight and ending around noon (CST) Friday with 2-4" in most places. Isolated higher amounts are possible near the 5-6" range." He might grill for us if we only get 2 more inches Ã¯Â¿Â½ more than that and you could probably hear him laugh all the way to your house. Beuhl, I am intrigued by the thought of using the slow cooker. I have an older one that has a metal container that sits on a griddle style base. I know the ham would fit nicely in there. I wonder if the glaze would do better in the roaster or the slow cooker. The instruction booklet has been missing for years. As I remember it was only 3 or 4 thin pages with very little real info. Cindy, may I have your apricot, mustard and honey glaze recipe. I promise to wrap that ham in foil before baking. It sounds delicious! I think my brown sugar and bourbon would stick tight to the foil and everyone would be tearing off bits of foil so they could lick the glaze off. I see you are due for a high of 52 degrees tomorrow. I do miss South Carolina winters!! Here in my part of Iowa we are promised a high of 20 tomorrow, which really isnÃ¯Â¿Â½t too bad. (My southern bones canÃ¯Â¿Â½t believe IÃ¯Â¿Â½m saying that.) Northcarolina, I use my roaster to cook 15 to 18 pounds of pork (I also use boston butt) for BBQ all the time. The next time IÃ¯Â¿Â½m making a smaller amount I will try the slow cooker. Hmmm Ã¯Â¿Â½ New YearÃ¯Â¿Â½s BBQ. I think I will try your sage and sugar combination with my spices. I have been wanting something with sage lately. I love the aroma of sage cooking. Jakabedy, I like cooking a big turkey in the roaster because it does seem cook up more moist than in the oven. But my old Panasonic convection microwave cooked a very moist turkey in half the time. Speed Ovens or mini countertop convection oven

A good SpeedOven is a full replacement for a basic convection oven -- and it certainly is a replacement for a countertop convection oven. I can't say anything about the Frigidaire model, but our Miele SpeedOven is certainly fully functional. Be careful that some cheaper models have unintuitive restrictions that make them less functional. So, read the manual carefully. Now, I can't really comment on whether a SpeedOven makes for a full replacement of a toaster oven. Toaster ovens are popular because they are small and because you can move your slices of toast really close to the broiler element. This might or might not work quite as well with a SpeedOven. And at least with our Miele, I find the broiler is a lot less powerful than the fantastically overpowered broiler in our gas oven. But it probably is still more powerful than the broiler in an average countertop model. For us, space requirements were a big issue. We wanted to make sure that there is absolutely minimal clutter on the countertops. And that was worth extra money to us. So, I don't regret the decision to have bought a high-end SpeedOven. But that absolutely wouldn't be the correct answer for everybody. We also have a combination steam oven, and that is the most-used appliance in our house. Again, quite pricey, but it also gets a ton of use and makes great food.

Most reliable counter-top microwave

Whatever they sell at Costco and you can return it if it fails. My mom researched and bought one with good reviews at another store. It stopped working. She dug up her receipt and the manufacturer warranty had expired the week before. They were inflexible about honoring it since it was a few days past. They just do not make things like they used to. I might also pick a model by the convenience buttons that worked for how I use it such as add a minute or 30 seconds.

When I had my kitchen renovated, I had a microwave shelf designed under the center part of my upper cabinet, with a big enough shelf to house a large microwave. I love my current Panasonic microwave! It is 22” wide, 12” high, and 18” deep. I use it daily to make my oatmeal in the morning and reheat food as needed.

My circa 2003/2004 GE OTR had a backlit LCD touchpanel that blacked-out (other than the separate clock/time display) when not in use. I don't know if there were countertop GE models at the time with such.

MIne is smaller since it is in my upper cabinets. I use it mainly to reheat and defrost. The defrost setting is better than my previous Kenmore. Only negative, and it isn't really one, is you'll want to keep the manual. Lots of shortcuts and preprograming that I haven't memorized yet.

I found a bigger one on sale and bought it for our basement even though the kids will probably only ever use the popcorn button.

My Panasonic “Genius Prestige Plus” has a control pad that is backlit when you “wake it up”by opening the door.

I don't use a micro anymore.

This air fryer toaster oven does so many things better than the larger range oven. I don't mind losing the reheat capabilities of a micro. Changed habits.

Maybe look at the Breville Smooth Wave. Americas Test Kitchen liked this one the best.
