Big changes afoot for our family :-)
Comments (13)Because we've both worked weird shift jobs where we might not see each other properly for days, we're used to not living in each other's pockets. I think that's been a strength for our marriage to not be dependent on one another but to complement each other. It's worked for 30 years now :-) I too think this was meant to be. The electronic age has helped immensely. We teleconferenced our loan application with a bank officer on the other side of the country, got our finanicals emailed to us by our accountant in the city, which we emailed on to the bank, had copies of the offer and acceptance emailed by the real estate agent which we've also forwarded to the bank, paid the deposit by electronic transfer and organised the inspections (building and termite) by email and paid by electronic transfer. All in a few days. If we'd been using snail mail it would have taken a couple of weeks. I'm hoping to organise a family painting party to give the place a quick coat of something neutral and maybe recarpet before DH moves it, it will be much easier when it's empty. We had a family painting party for DH's brother when he built his home. DH wants to do some of his own cooking but I will set him up with a few defrost and heat meals for nights when he can't be bothered. The area he is moving into is one of the gourmet suburbs of Perth and he's about 500 metres away in either direction from two well known cafe and specialty gourmet shop strips. I'm planning to cook a few meals for two each week and send DH off with half- otherwise I'll be tempted to just have cheese and crackers in front of the TV or PC :-)...See MoreDo you have any of the Nest products? Comments (1)That's an interesting article, thanks. This discontinued product linehad been acquired by Nest but wasn't able to build enough momentum to be successful. It's a busy space, many companies producting home automation systems and many aren't mutually interoperable. The Nest thermostat has had a troublesome childhood. There seemed to have been too much engineering emphasis on connectivity and the user interface, and not enough into the guts of the device to perform the expected garden variety HVAC functions. I've read there were many problems and functional incompatibilities with different types of equipment and configurations. Many of the problems have been addressed but there was a trail of dead bodies left in the wake. Honeywell, the Gold Standard of thermostats for decades on end, has several thermostat models that offer many of the Nest's functions and more and - they're well known to and understood by HVAC contractors. The article ends with a few suggestions, one of which is to buy products from larger companies. It's not always true but in this case, that's very good advice....See MoreBig change in our landscape this morning
Comments (10)A busy morning, as I thought that, though it froze at night, warmer days would mean that veggies in the barn would be O.K. for a while ... but the forecast was for 0 degrees C today. The two kinds of squash and the pumpkins, 2 - 3 dozen each, were in three locations. I threw a few bales of straw and some loose down from the loft, moved some things as required and built a wall of bales part way round the one kind of squash, spread more straw on the floor, then moved the other kind of squash and the pumpkins alongside them and threw forksful of straw over and around the whole assemblage. En route to the village church to pick the veggies left there yesterday, I passed a car in the ditch, with a tow truck fixing to pull it out. I'd understood that I needed to get to the church before noon, when the secretary leaves, but on arrival found a number of cars there and a gathering of artists doing their thing in the hall. Loaded the trays of veggies, took them to the suburban church and left some there. They'd taken three large pumpkins from the sanctuary and one fellow that's a friend thought that, as they'd been inside for three weeks, they'd need to be composted, but I felt them for soft spots, tapped them lightly, and opined that they'd be O.K. to give out as food, but as he and wife are operating the food pantry this afternoon, suspect that I'll find all of the big ones still there on my return to pick them up, but there are some of my pumpkins there, so they won't be short. Looks like it's time to dig out the long johns. I started to remove stakes and strings from the garden the other day, but there are lots more of them, including the poles and strings that held the vine beans. There was to be more snow overnight, and there was some, but it's been blowing quite strongly so there has been some drifting, but they'd forecast upwards of a foot, all told, and it hasn't snowed much today ... so far. Son's companion is interested in using some/most/all of the wild grapes (small little beggars, they are) to make some jam so will take part of them to her when I go back to town to pick up the veggies. I'll also have a visit with son, who went to Toronto to blow up balloon animals and toys for the kids during the Santa Claus parade on Sunday, so, being 50+, he was pretty well beat on his return, last night. Had to carry whatever he needed in a backpack ... as storage lockers in the bus station are a no-no, these days. Hope you all had a lovely/(interesting?) weekend. And ... good wishes for a memorable, happy - and very thankful - Thanksgiving. ole joyfuelled ... with some fuelling help from veggies, here and there...See MoreWeather, what a big change!
Comments (25)You may have seen TV coverage of recent eruptions at Volcanoes National Park on Big Island of Hawaii -- a new vent spewing molten lava into the sea. Trade Winds weakened here yesterday, allowing winds to spread all the noxious VOG from Big Island over the islands from Maui to Kauai. Trades may strengthen by Monday. Until then...we are glad to have our new mini-split A/C systems. It is warm -- 85F. The drop in Trades is part of the system of Pineapple Express system that is dumping rain on California....See Morelkloes
