Lighting Design Dilemma Kitchens

Help with a lighting plan in the kitchen

Hi all, hope you can help. We got the design for the kitchen and the electrician is asking us where we want (spot) lights. I am struggling to find where to put them. I have no idea. Its not a big kitchen (5m x 3m) and I would like it to fit in well together. I have attached two pictures, one with the lighting (pink - signifying spot lights) and one without. Any ideas would really help me. Thanks in advance! Francoise

The golden rules
1. Always place lighting 12 inches in front of tall elevations. ...
2. Don't forget to add lighting under your cabinets! ...
3. Always install lighting in the centre of the island. ...
4. Watch out for joists! ...
5. Multiply the light sources
THese are the basics for lighting Ilke all lights to be LED 4000K I like the under cabinet lighting to be on one switch, the island lights on a nother and the ceiling lights on a nother . I see no reason for dimmable lighting and the island pendants should actually light the island not the ceiling

IMO a kitchen in like an operating room and always better to have too much lighting than too little that is why I like the 3 switches

If there are only base cabinets on the sink wall then what you're showing is fine. If there are also upper cabinets you need to move them out into the room some so they light the front part of the countertop. How are you planning on lighting the area with the table?

thx David. Will go cr6 and a generic can with an edison fixture (i'm in Ontario). I'm still open to ideas if anyone wants to chime in on where these should go. With the benefit of a reread of David's thread, I'm now thinking the following, working from top to bottom: - 4 along the top of the pic, just inside the counters - 4 more just before the island, running from outside the banquet table area to the cooking area counters - 1 behind the middle of island, and 1 in line with that between island and rangetop - 4 on the other side of the island, matching the lines of the other 4 on the other side of the island. Maybe one more in that string on the left side? - if 5 above, another 5 just inside the counters on the bottom side of the kitchen. thx for any help with this..

I wish I understood when you said: "An alternative is to run high output LEDs on-top of a normal cornice system offset slightly.". We will call Nuworld tomorrow too to see if they have a comparable product like the lighting company from Turkey. Our light plan shows 3 regular ceiling fixtures. The ones in front of the window could be up and down casting pendants. The ones over the sink and big one over the island I assume task down lights. I can't see I would be bothered by inconsistent cove light shadows. I think the idea is worth exploring carefully, especially considering we won't be able to have under cab lighting and given the lower ceilings limit up light fixtures. From what I understand cove lighting is a very good way to get ambient/general room lighting. Carol

I have a fan in my kitchen and while I find it a distinct relief in hot weather, I can't have it on while canning or any cooking that requires consistent, steady temperature control, as the fan tends to blow the flame around. That's fine - I turn the fan down or off for a while. It hasn't killed me yet, so it isn't that big a deal. My house is a Craftsman and I looked high and low for an appropriate-style ceiling fan that wasn't scary-expensive. Apparently I was hunting Unicorns. I settled for a basic simple fan style that at least doesn't look all wrong, even if it wasn't what I'd envisioned. It was cheap, and can be easily upgraded down the road. Not much help, I know - I have box beams all over my main floor (although not in the kitchen) but the light fixtures are not in the beams. We're using 4" cans in our kitchen remodel. I also need a very bright kitchen, and prefer warm lighting. Even though we are putting in under cabinet lighting throughout, I prefer arranging our can lights so they provide the best lighting - which won't be 'in a row' in some areas. The can light over the fridge will be pulled out further, while the one over the sink will be more inset than most (although we are now considering putting in a schoolhouse style light over our clean up sink). Some prefer the cans to match up, but I want great lighting, so I don't care where they are located on the ceiling, so long as they provide me the best light possible. As to how far apart, we are still working this one out. I'm thinking 30" - but depends on how they measure out on the ceilings. I'll let others more qualified in that area assist you.

The amount of light at the counter surface for task lighting should be at least 450 lumens. The bulb output will be at the fixture. Led lights will also have a color temperature. 3500k is common. The bulb light pattern can be spot, narrow flood and flood. Here's a higher end source. Home - DMF Lighting I don't see an exhaust hood. I'd look at an induction range or cooktop for your space. Removing the wall ovens for counter would be my choice.

The two lights in the aisle should probably be closer to the oven/pantry/ref. The light to the left of the oven, not sure if that is over a wall shelving unit, but if so might need to move out over the counter while it washes the shelving simultaneously.

Hopefully the (3) wall rectangles-with-a-dot are not sconces, but maybe power connections for the cabinet runs. The (3) light fixture over the dining table looks like it should provide enough light for that area.
