can i graft a fruit cherry tree to a wild cherry tree?
Comments (20)I have read that in this instance that people can do two grafts. The native variety being the most hardy and strongest rooting, then a short intermediary piece which can bridge between the native and fruiting varieties. Can anyone assist? Or know someone who can? I have cut down a large native cherry and would like to graft lapins and stella to the sprouts which are sure to come up this spring. "example taken from plum/almond stone fruit grafting" - " Also (and this is where the fun starts) most fruit trees in the Prunus genus are sometimes compatible with each other: almonds, apricots, nectarines, peaches, and plums all are compatible for grafting, but occasionally it's complicated. For example, some plum rootstock is not compatible with peaches or nectarines; and some almonds require an intermediate step before grafting onto some plum rootstocks."...See Morekwanzan Cherry
Comments (2)It sounds like you are OVER watering them. Let them just begin to dry out (I mean dry, not moist) and then give em a deep watering if you don't get rain. The watering is not so much a schedule, more like an acquired skill uniquely adapted to your yard and sometimes several different places in your yard. As for how it will respond after the stress already, coin flip. John...See Moretransplanting Kwanzan cherry with two trunks
Comments (18)here is my BEST suggestion .... if this was from a good friend... destroy it now.. and go buy one at the bigboxstore.. and plant it instead.. you will always have the story of the generosity of the gift.. and a great plant besides .... and then invite the friend over next year.. and tell them how great it is... lol ... since it is a root sucker .... it might not even be kwanzan.. and frankly.. i would have no interest in investing 3 to 5 years.. to find out if it is ... if it is not a good friend.. get rid of it .... not all gifts are worthy of keeping.. no matter what the intent ... i can not tell you.. how many things that dad brought to my first house ..... that mysteriously 'died' ... rotflmbo .... you cant be rude and tell him to quit bringing stuff ... but hey.. they all dont need to live.. in my yard anyway ... lol ... BTW ... it is borderline reliable in its flowering in my zone 5 ... subject to frosts and freeze in early spring.. all subject to your micro climate ... mine is only supreme.. MAYBE every other year .... some years nothing.. other years.. its OK .... it really is one of the hard ones.. for a newbie .... not that it will die.. but that you will be happy about it all ... ken...See MoreIs it too Late to Plant Kwanzan Cherry Tree?
Comments (11)Kwanzans are used here as street and parking lot trees because their branches go up at such a high angle. They're also used as landscape trees in people's gardens for the same reason, their footprint is smaller than the wide spreading varieties. They don't look too close to the drive for me. That said, they're not one of my favorite cherry trees, too large and coarse for the average garden. In addition, some understock used is a sprouting nightmare and the only time they look good is when they're blooming, in my opinion. Mike...See More- last month
