what's local in your area?
Comments (10)We chose our new town (had to move out of Toronto's real estate h***) in part, honestly, because of the excellent local hard cider. And we knew that it was a new wine region, and while the local wines were BRAND new and still very uneven at that time (about two years ago now), we figured that where wine went, good food was likely to follow. And indeed, the wine is developing nicely --- quite a few decent ones already, and more every season --- and we are discovering excellent restaurants, artisanal food outlets, niche farm retailers, etc., some of which were already here and some of which are new as this area becomes a food tourism destination. Slow Food has just begun a chapter in my town of 4,000, and we're the first test market in Canada for the "fresh from the farm" Web site (see link --- it is intended to help people anywhere in North America find local producers!). We don't have as much PYO as I'd like --- generally strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, apples, pumpkins. The climate is much like upstate New York. The soil is supposed to be almost identical to that of Burgundy, and perhaps the best place in North America to grow Pinot Noir grapes, although that pesky zone 5 winter does make for some extra headaches at the wineries (all vines have to be buried in the fall and uncovered in the spring!). I love, love, love the fresh produce. To be honest, I am such a city girl that when I thought about good food following good wine I mostly had restaurants in mind. It was such a happy realization to find the farm stands galore --- and of course, many of the restaurants feature local foods prominently. Even the local casual hot dog eatery, the Buddha Dog ("make me one with everything" ;-) ) features cheeses from the 100-year-old local cheese factory and sauces made from all-local ingredients. So, while I miss the ethnic restaurants and anything-you-could-possibly-want grocery stores of Toronto, the great fresh food evens out the eating experience, especially at this time of year! Comments (2)I had visited that site. They list 3 "most cold-hardy" Mexican varieties grown primarily in California, though of the three Mexicola is seen for sale here. Just surprised the sellers don't offer more information about which are A or B pollinators. Thanks for your reply though....See MoreFantastic melon recipe from my grocery store...
Comments (10)Thanks, Kframe, this sounds terrific! Sharon, any chance this is the recipe you were looking at - its simple but quite good! Posted by littleonefb (My Page) on Wed, Jan 31, 07 at 23:33 I forgot to add this recipe my daughter wanted for her party. The girls wanted something "healthy and refreshing" to also go with all the "unhealthy type food." CUCUMBER AND WATERMELON SALAD FROM EVERY DAY FOOD INGREDIENTS 3 cups peeled and cubed european cucumber 3 cups cubed watermelon 3 tablespoons lime juice optional pepper and salt to taste combine the cucumber, watermelon and lime juice. If not serving right away add salt and pepper if desired just before serving. My changes. I leave out the salt and just add pepper. This tastes wonderful served over sherbet or vanilla ice cream as well. My daughter likes to make one as is without any salt and another bowl without salt but she adds a sprinkle of white wine to the salad just before serving....See MoreHelp with my young avocado tree
Comments (7)Daniel, I went to see my avocado tree and how it looks today, mine is a Brogdon and is huge and healthy. With the winds that we had it has some leaf drop but the trunks look healthy About your tree, the leaves look healthy but not the trunk, maybe some fungus or canker? I don't know. When I took the fruit tour in Echo, the first thing that they said is that avocados get disease from over water or planting them wrong, mine is in a mound and a good drainage area. Hope an expert can answer to your question and maybe the proper treatment if any. In my case, I don't baby any tree and if they don't perform like expected, I plant another one.
