Where have they all gone ?
Comments (24)Woodthrush I have white pampas grass and sometimes in the fall the deer try to make beds in them. What about bushes? like forsythia? they root so easy. last fall I cut a few branches off mine and just stuck them in the ground and this spring I have lil sticks covered in yellow flowers across my back yard . in about 3-4 years they will be good size bushes :) Im trying to make a living fence back there :) caught my neighbor peeping toming us :0 I have to agree with the trading. its not as fun. I had a trade and the person wasn't very corespondent. no chit chat. not even a Hi or hello, just a please send me or addy. No response to any e-mails I sent. not even when I let them know I sent there box out. and No letting me know they sent theirs. If it wasn't for me ordering from Edelweiss perennials who's box came same day as my trade's, I wouldn't of known it was here. And so far No letting me know they got my box. I dont think they have. I keep checking the tracking number and its been at there PO April 24 waiting for pick up. I sent another e-mail letting them know but no response...guess Ill just keep checking the tracking number. hope they pick it up before the plants die :( or the website is behind? an yea they have internet cause there still trading.. I cant complain to much. they did send nice plants :) but the no communication thing is a bit frustrating ..........See MoreWhere have all the Texans gone?
Comments (8)Just who I've been looking for....someone to give me some direction. I have daylillies rescued from after my step-dad died. I have no names but love them anyway. Well this heat has parched them out. What do I do with the dried leaves? and when? I've tried to give them enough water too keep them from dying but not enough to look great. I need to move about 4 dozen clumps this fall (my pecan trees caused too much shade this yr) how soon can I do this? He used to mow some of his rows down sometime in the summer.... is this right?? he had many beds and then a garden with about 15 rows 75 ft long....See MoreWhere have all the finches gone?
Comments (13)My gold finches mobbed the feeder 2 weeks ago and then all the snow melteda nd the small birds disappeared. I did note that a neighbor of mine who rarely fed birds put out feed during the Thanksgiving holiday and had several birds. Three days ago, all my birds disappeared which gave me concern for fear that something drastic happened to them. This afternoon, the weather was changing to colder and the small birds began to come back. About the sparrow: Approximately 10 years ago, a virus swept through the English sparrow population and nearly wiped them out in a region from the Mississippi River eastward and they have not recovered. They were the most populous bunch and a nuisance, but no more, Since that time, I have seen only one English Sparrow. Sometimes, when my birds suddenly leave during a popular feeding time, I have spied a hawk sitting high in a tree surveying the scene - this pretty much explains that absence. I do get concerned when my birds disappear for a day or more thinking they might have gotten into some bad feed or rat poison. I am convinced that something has happened in the environment because my bird visitors have fallen to half of what it was a week ago. Fifteen years ago, I did could spy on occasion gross beaks; Also red polls would frequent our feeder during the depth of cold waves. Gross beaks are grazers. They do not hang around one location. In winter, they flock together and will stop for a few minutes to do easy pickings and then move on. They rarely come back to the same place on the same day. Both gross beaks and red polls have disappeared. I have seen none for the past 5 years....See MoreWhere have all the (female) flowers gone?
Comments (11)Oh, I think they are very unhappy plants. I have 6 zucchini plants. 4 of them are living in a small kids pool of MG potting mix. Sadly the mix settled since I planted them, so I think they don't have as much soil as they would like. The other 2 are in a larger kiddie pool I bought for my son's pumpkins. I didn't think the pumpkins would live since I was transplanting them, so I filled the pool 1/3 full of dry leaves and the rest of the way with MG garden soil to avoid wasting $ on plants that wouldn't survive. I threw the 2 zucchini plants I had left to transplant into one side of the pool. After I read you guys say that garden soil isn't meant to be planted in without mixing with regular soil I threw some more soil from the yard into the pool and mixed it in the top few inches. The weird thing is that while I wound up with 6 large zucchini plants, the ones in the large pool (leaves and garden soil) are way healthier looking than the ones in the small pool. Apparently more crappy soil is better than less better soil. The cucumbers are actually very happy. I've got them growing in a city pickers box and they seem to be loving the constant supply of water. I originally had 6 cucumbers (3 of straight eight on one side, 3 pickle barrel hybrid on the other) planted in the box and asked you guys what to do about thinning. I built a little trellis in the box and cut out the weakest looking one, which seems to have been a mistake. The two on the side I cut are producing a TON of male and female flowers and the three plants on the other side are only producing male flowers. Oh, and I went an checked out the pumpkin flowers this morning. There were 6 flowers and they were all male....See Morerosaprimula
