Any Idea How Much Money I Saved DH??
Comments (6)Yes, we do!! I am always telling him how much money I saved HIM --- even though it is OURS. I cannot think of one project we have ever done that has not taken 5x the time and cost twice the money! We try to DIY whenever we can, as we figure that for the most part if someone else can do it, so can we. It is also a standing joke among our friends as although I am really good at spending my own money, I am even better at spending someone else's. So if I go shopping with a friend, I always make it a point to tell how much money we "saved". My threads are still on this page - UPDATE ON PATHETIC BATHROOM and BEDROOM UPDATE. I think that maybe I spent $175 on all of the materials and hardware. I found those rods at a Value City here that is closing --- I paid $4.00 each!! One of my next plans is to update my backyard. We have a big cement slab there that used to be the kids' basketball court. It is now just an eyesore. I also want to take out the flagstone patio that we had put in about 8 years ago. I SHOULD have done it myself as these guys ripped me off for $1,500 and didn't even put a base under it. It is all uneven. But these are not projects I will do myself. I don't have the back-power anymore - - and concrete was never my forte anyway!!...See MoreAny Ideas to Cut Costs on MBed & Bath Addition?
Comments (1)Skip the pool in favor of a Y membership with an outdoor pool. You never recoup any of your money for a pool, and it can actualy detract from the value of your home. As far as the construction itself, plan for 20% overage and you might be on budget. Average bath remodels are around $15K. That's just to replace what's there. WHen you are also creating the room and the fixtures, you're gonna be well above average. Say 150K + for the addition without the pool and in a low cost labor market. Double that if you are anywhere expensive like Boston or San Francisco. The only way to significantly decrease your costs is to significantly increase your timeline and GC it yourself. That sometimes doesn't even help....See MoreAny idea how far down to trim/cut back a Duranta?
Comments (6)I had two durantas at the entrance of my driveway at my last house. I cut all dead growth off after winter before they started setting new branches. The Mexican lady that sold them to my Dad (and he then gave them to me), said you should never top them, but instead, cut out branches from the center and up underneath to not destroy the "umbrella" growth habit. But frankly, mine always died off every winter so I cut everything brown off each year. And they came back beautifully in their normal "umbrella" shape, so cut away is my vote. :)...See MoreAny ideas on how to save my black prince succulent?
Comments (20)Paul, I have considered using a mix of just inorganic matter but so far my plants have been alright in my current soil mix that has a bit of coco peat and gardening soil, and a lot of charcoal, perlite and pumice. They're all outdoors with a roof over them so they get full morning sun + no rains (unless there's a storm and winds are crazy) and dry out 1 or 2 days after watering. Once the gardening soil and coco peat finishes I'll try growing some of my plants in just perlite, pumice and charcoal. I dislike the coco peat quite a lot because it seems to compress and lose its airy quality quite quickly. The coco peat and gardening soil was in the succulent mixes i bought when i was a beginner to all this :( but i hate throwing away things that can still be used so i just try to make them work....See MoreShyanne Myster
