Potted fir tree turning brown

Hello! I live in New York City. I have a potted Christmas tree that I moved onto my terrace after the holidays. it has been fine until recently when it started turning brown. im not sure what to do! the soil feels damp. Thank you for your thoughts.

thats actually not bad at all for what it went thru ..

at least you didnt call it a pine tree ... and its not a fir .... id call it an arb... or some close derivation therein ...

all things good.. the new growth should come out just fine.. yours is just showing the stress of what you put it thru .. and the fact that you probably couldnt harden it off properly when you bodily thru it out the door in january ... that must have been a shock to the living tissue.. and this is the result of that ...

thats a very tall tree for the pot its in ... presuming its going to live on your balcony.. you are probably going to have to figure out how to stay upright when it gets windy ...

btw: interior browning is cyclical and annual.. and increased by many factors like drought.. bad winter.. etc... it is common.. as the plant ages.. to have to go in there.. and roughly remove all the brown carp inside .. and what you are seeing is part of that.. just sped up due to the stresses mentioned above ...

Thanks for your response. The pot looks incredibly small in this photo, it is a bit larger that it appears here. The nursery that sold it to us told us to wait until the spring to repot it, I am assuming that would be a good idea at this point.

Likely one of the most common issues on this forum. Watering regularly may not be watering adequately. Surely transplant shock combined with winter. All you can do is wait. Fert is bad. Likely some of Dan's Standard Reply plays here too. Dan

boy .. adrian MI has been near drought for the last month .... no rain has actually been sufficient to deeply water the soil .... where are you in MI??? .. and are you sure that your tree is getting sufficient water in the root zone.. especially if it is a recent transplant????? heat and humidity should be irrelevant on an established zone appropriate conifer .... if the root system is working properly .... need that pic .... ken

for mites.. you shake a branch over a white sheet of paper... and you see MINUISCULE black things moving.. you do not see them on the plant.. pin head size ... did you ever.. go dig into the root mass you planted.. and confirm if there is any moisture in the root mass you planted.. i dont see that you have ... mites usually attack an already stressed tree ... even if you have mites.. and even if you get rid of them.. you havent addressed the stress .. besides the fact.. that i would never spray chemicals.. on a stressed tree ... i reread your replies.. all you said.. is that you water a few times per week.. but you have not answered.. if you are watering PROPERLY.. deeply ... i can squirt a plant like that every night.. and it will die... you HAVE TO find out.. if there is any moisture at 6 inches.. where the roots are ... ken

Take 2 on posting my response...since the original didnt post the week or so ago.... I'd love to get the tree more light, but I live in a small apt, and only have a VERY small entry balcony that I share w/ 1 neighbor and this time of year especially only gets like 6-8 hrs of direct sunlight When I water, the water does drain, but has a tendency to sit for a few seconds on top before it all soaks in. The potting mix is something generic my garden designer friend used when we re-potted it in the spring. I feel that it's time to re-pot it again since I've noticed the main root trying to grow out of the hole at the bottom of the pot, but I dont have any deeper pots to put it in. I have one that's wider, but not deeper. Fertilizing? I'm just a poor student that's developed a sudden desire for growing things...this is a hobby going crazy and I dont really have money to get fertalizers. I hope to be starting a vermicompost bin soon so I might be able to get some worm tea in the future to use.
