Different brand microwave and wall oven

Have to finalize kitchen appliances. I do not want to go with a microwave and oven combo. I like the KA 30 inch in wall oven and Frigidaire 2.2 cu.ft microwave. Can I place them in wall next to each other? Will it look odd? I think microwaves die sooner and don't want to spend 2000 CAD for a KA in wall microwave or get a combo..

If they are stainless steel, it should be okay. If they are white or black, you may wish to compare them as there might be variances in the shade.

Put the MW into an "appliance garage." We have a cabinet above our wall oven with a horizontal door (opens like a garage door) that houses our MW. When closed, it matches the rest of our cabinetry, but can be left open when actively cooking. Integrates perfectly with rest of kitchen, and allows to use cheap countertop MW, which performs just as well as the ridiculously overpriced built-in MW's that use the exact same "guts" as the cheapo countertop. And when it needs replacement, I'm out $200, not $1000.

I agree with Jpmom that you don't want a MW on top of a double oven - it's just too high. However, although she does not like a MW drawer, many people on this forum adore theirs (note that all MW drawers are made by Sharp, so if you decide to get one, no need to pay up for a different brand name, as it is just a rebadge). Is there no other location in your kitchen? Do you have a pantry where you could keep the MW? There was just a recent thread on this MW placement topic. http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/3833699/placement-of-a-microwave?n=42 I am not a fan of the oven/microwave combos, as I think there are too many compromises in both in order to combine them. Just MHO. If you are doing a major kitchen remodel, you might want to re-think the cooktop in the island, mostly because how are you going to exhaust it. This topic has been covered a zillion times on this forum, but the upshot is if you care about good exhaust, you should have your cooktop on a wall, so that the exhaust capabilities are not hampered by trying to exhaust over an island setup. On the other hand, many people are absolutely fine with poor or no exhaust, and perhaps that is you, so never mind.

Search on this forum about the blue interior enamel chipping. It has been a problem for 10 years on all Wolf ovens with a blue interior. There are several lawsuits going on. Number of sales isn't really a great measure for quality. Lot's of crap that gets sold every day. I agree that each manufacturer has a narrow core competency, and then rounds out their product palette with additional appliances that consumers ask for. Sometimes, these products are sourced from third parties (e.g. Wolf's CSO that comes from V-Zug) and sometimes they are just a half-hearted in-house engineering effort. Both Samsung and LG on the surface appear to be driven by marketing rather than engineering. So, I'd be hesitant to recommend the brands, but I admitted don't know this particular appliance. It might just be a positive surprise. As for @Rebecca Canna's concern about oven capacity, I wouldn't let that drive my purchase decision. We have a Miele XL combination steam oven (small by most American standards) and a Bluestar gas range (unbelievably large by most metrics). The Miele is by far our most frequently used appliance (in fact, it's in use as we speak). The available space is very rarely a limitation. I'd pick two small ovens over one large oven any day of the week. Having said that, the Bluestar oven is nice. But that's more because of its amazing broiler than because of its size. Incidentally, one advantage of smaller size is faster preheat, where the Bluestar needs 20-40 minutes, the small Miele CSO frequently needs less than 5 minutes.

I appreciate people’s concerns about combo appliances. I just replaced my combination Kitchenaid microwave/oven when the microwave oven died...AFTER over 25 years of use!!!!! Just noting that Kitchenaid makes reliable appliances and that most people will probably remodel their kitchen before their appliances die. When my microwave died (I love to bake and use it a lot!), I replaced the double unit. And had to reconfigure my cabinetry. But I felt it was worth it. Love my new Kitchenaid combo. Just another opinion....

It might look a bit odd as they appliances are so different in height: 28" for the oven, but only 18" for the microwave trim kit. As the two appliances are the same width, 30", perhaps you could stack the appliances instead of putting them side by side.

Actually reread the OP and agree with wdccruise that if you were suggesting placing them side by side, it would look weird. What we did was to stack the MW garage over the oven (am not home or I'd post a photo, maybe tomorrow). So you get the vertical orientation of a combo oven/MW, but with the advantages I outlined above.

@ptreckel: I think you were lucky with a MW that lasted 25 years! Ours die with regularity--just replaced ours last month after about 10 years of service and thought we did well. But sure was happy to be paying $200, not $2000, to replace it! Remember that no matter what Kitchenaid's reputation is, the guts of the MW had to come from either Sharp or Panasonic, and they are identical to those in my $200 countertop unit.
