could you help in decorating entry, landscape and hardscape please

Hello dears ,

Our garden was neglected for few years and landscape was very random

I want to remodel my garden and landscape and I want your great Advice

I want some areas or pots for annuals ,, and other for : perennials, trees, fruit trees , palms ,

also I think very big pots would be beautiful and put a waterfall

but I dont know how to arrange all of

that

I want it change massively to surprise my parents

(I could move any plant )

this the view from the living (last floor) all floors

have the same

(east on left ) .... so its very sunny and little ventilation...so I think large and shading trees will be good

I live in Cairo ... it is equivalent to zone 9-10 in USA hardiness zone

I have no experience whatsoever with such a climate as I live in New England. However, from a structural standpoint, you might try to find a trustworthy contractor who could install three very large trees to balance the scale of the tall building with the ground plane. One tree should go in the space in photo #2 to the left of the deep end of the pool. The other two elsewhere in a triangular aspect. Perhaps one where the entry paving forms a corner in photo 3, and the third off to the opposite side of the pool. Whatever is in there now is just much to short. Make a serious investment in the proper giant trees for the conditions and the rest will fall into place. A lush ground cover all over would tie the place together. Whether it's soil improvement or just selecting something that is amenable to the climate, a uniform simple 'lawn' of low maintenance plants would make this peaceful. Visually, a waterfall would have to be enormous to look to scale here, and would have to go to the far end of the pool. Tricky to make that look cohesive. A water feature that creates sound near a sitting area is always welcome. A huge modern sculptural piece might be fun toward the left of the deep end of the pool. For style and realistic installation issues, you really need a designer, a plant expert, and a qualified contractor. You should stroll around town to find inspiration from you neighbors. Best wishes!

Jim, I think you are putting the cart before the horse a bit :-) It is always more desirable and the outcome more satisfactory if the plan is in place before the work begins (or is even contracted for). While you may very well get some creative ideas on how to address your issues from this forum, I'd suggest hiring a designer/consultant in your area to give you a hand. First, it is always difficult (I'd say nearly impossible) to design from remote - there are just so many variables that cannot be appreciated or understood based on a couple of photos or even a good description of the situation. And an onsite consultation or even the formality of plan that incorporates all elements - the drive, entry, retaining walls, planting areas and all of the front garden we can't see from the photos - will provide a uniform and cohesive approach that a piecemeal attack is unlikely to achieve. Of course the work itself can be phased in as budget and priorities allow. Not sure exactly what you mean by "when the weather clears up", but winter tends to be an excellent time for this type of planning so that all is in place and ready to go when construction commences in spring. I feel a bit like a matchmaker, but Audric, you are in close proximity (or relatively so) and a budding designer who has already demonstrated capabilities.......perhaps it is feasible for you to give Jim a personal assist in this project?

Yardvaark, thanks a lot for those thoughts. I agree with the assessment of the parking pad. I’m unsure about getting rid of the parking spot entirely- maybe I could sandwich a narrow spot (for occasional use by visitors) by squeezing that planting bed on the right side of the porch. I suppose I’ll have to get my measuring tape out to see what I’m working with- for a sense of scale, that front sidewalk is about five feet wide. You’re right that the side is narrow, and can only accommodate the driveway. You might be able to discern from the picture that my driveway directly abuts my driveway- I had thought about maybe a narrow planting strip to delineate my neighbour’s driveway from mine. On the left there is currently a cup flower by the fence between my yard’s and the neighbour’s where you have your small tree- it gets to be about seven feet tall by this time of year. Pinkmountain, thanks for that thought. That’s a good idea, particularly as the balcony railings ought to be higher than they are anyway.

I would not build something to outline the patio. You have a garden to do that. Most gardens don't look at their best in early spring, when plants haven't leafed out yet. You could put something like artemesia to edge your planting beds. That would be an outline. I'm not sure the yellow really goes. I'd be inclined to paint the bench and the table on the porch a blue that goes with your shutters and punch up some color with a pink that matches the tulips (or whatever color your roses? are they roses? will be). Like with pillows on the bench. You have a lot of items in your entryway. My observation is that elegant entries have a few bold, coordinated items. You have 4 stools/tables, 2 of them with empty urns on them. The table is above the window sill. It looks random, not designed. The urns go well will your house color, the yellow table doesn't. It's hard to judge what you should keep, because maybe you use that table often. And, of course, a lot of the great pics you see on Houzz are staged and professionally photographed. It you removed the yellow table and whatever table is in the corner by the door, bought big bouquets of flowers in colors that go with the house (a lot of tulip pink, a dab of blue) for the urns and placed them carefully, got the bow on your wreath to match, and took a pic from the right angle on a sunny day, you'd have a pretty impressive picture.

Dennis - Unless I missed it, you didn't say what direction the front of your house faces, and how much sun it got, that is, if it's sun is obstruction by tall buildings on the other side of the street. The other very, very important thing for you to think about, of which other Houzzers might not be aware is that Southern California goes through extreme water shortages pretty much every single year, and many areas are told to not water their lawn or do it only minimally for parts of the year. That should really inform how you think about landscaping. Admittedly, I do understand if you despise cacti and other succulents. But you might want to seriously think about eschewing live grass in favor of artificial turf. There are marvelous artificial turfs now that would fool anyone, certainly from standing height, and you obviously don't need to water it and think of all the $$ you save in gardener's fees, and none of those those pesky varmints rolling up the sod, either.! You can can still have specifically carved out flower beds, and trees and bushes with planned irrigation for those specific areas. Your area abounds with very experienced landscape architects. You want someone who has an artistic eye, and who knows hardscape and who is very familiar with the plants that do well in your area, and is familiar with the exigencies of life in SoCal and in your microclimate and can speak frankly with you about what you want to get out of your garden and how much work you are willing to put in to it. Do you sit outdoors in the front or the back? Do you want fragrant flowers on a trellis where you sit there or will a fragrance annoy the heck out of you? Will you sit outside in the morning or night, so do you need flowers that bloom in the am or bloom in the evening with colors that will be seen sell in twilight and at night? Do you want an herb garden for cooking? Do you want vegetables? Do you want several rose bushes so you can fill your house with roses, or other flowers so you can always have bouquets? Of course Dig Doug's designs look fantabulous as always, but note that his designs show significant hardscape changes to the front of the house. You might want to think about saving up some money for the hardscape work. If you get rid of the grass and put in artificial turf, you will end up saving a fortune of money on your water bill that you can put toward hardscape. If you have never owned a house before, you would not believe how much the water bill will be, and when you add in watering the lawn, holy moly!

I wanted to know start points to know how to control the design process because in our city there are a lot of untrusted or non-qualified
designer

I want to know what I understood is right or not

For the location of your #2 tree, I was thinking on the other side of the pool across from #1, toward the back.

Here in my region, there are growers of landscape plants that tend to be located beyond suburbia, as well as garden centers that do significant business with large scale design build firms. These kinds of places would be worth seeking out to get advice on plant material. They often can recommend installers who know what they are doing. For such a grand property, you can't just hire a 'mow and blow' contractor. That's what we call the often untrained contractors who mow lawns and whack up shrubs. The 'blow' refers to those awful, loud power tools they use instead of carefully raking grass clippings and leaves.
