Amaryllis WhiteFlowFarm Shipp.Charges Rant!
Comments (18)The more I think about this, the more I've kind of come to the following conclusion: Most of my plant orders are orchids. If I deal with the larger, well established companies I usually end up paying the higher shipping and handling costs. In fact I think I always do. Right now I can't think of an exception. When I deal with the smaller, specialty vendors, the shipping costs more accurately reflect the actually cost of mailing the plants to me - without any additional labor costs. I'm sure the majority of these smaller vendors are 1 or 2 people operations too, so maybe it's easier for them to absorb the actual labor of packing and mailing plants. Without a doubt I love these smaller operations! Not only because of the shipping costs, but because they carry plants no one else has. Their plants aren't always cheap by any means, but they can be very rare. Today I was browsing one of my favorite, smaller, orchid vendors and found a really cool plant he was selling for around $1500. Since I've ordered from him in the past, I know his shipping charges for this plant wouldn't be over $10. What would White Flower Farm charge for such a purchase? Kevin...See MoreMini-rant
Comments (90)Oh Tib!! I wanted to cry just reading your post. I'm glad that you have a new neighbor that may be able to rectify the situation. Actually, I hope he beats the crap out of them :c) What the hell is wrong with people!!! I was told when we bought our house that the guy who lived here before us treated his dogs in a similar fashion, the house smelled of urine and ropes were still tied to the trees; it really sickened me. We replaced everything that we could, appliances, doors, trim, floors, hardware, fixtures anything that could come off just to get his "negative energy" out of the house. IMO stealing a dog thats suffering like that isn't stealing, it's rescuing. And I'm just curious, if you've called animal control, why haven't they taken the animal from those people? what good are they if they don't protect animals in need of rescuing? GRRR.......See MoreFriday rant & raves
Comments (93)Robo is right. My job is within an agency that manages a very large fleet of vehicles - specifically, I deal with accidents and risk management. IMO there is no question that reversing into parking spaces is safer. Reverse Parking Could Save a Life Parking in reverse is a simple way to reduce the risk of accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that “267 people are killed and 15,000 injured each year by drivers who back into them, usually in driveways or parking lots.” Unfortunately, most often it is children and elderly people who are killed in backover crashes. NHTSA has ruled that all new vehicles under 10,000 pounds (including passenger vehicles, buses and trucks) must be equipped with rear visibility technology by May 2018. By reverse parking, you avoid backing out blindly into oncoming traffic or into the path of pedestrians. Misconceptions about Reverse Parking Myth #1: Reverse parking disrupts traffic. While reverse parking may disrupt traffic flow, it is arguable that backing out of a parking space also disrupts traffic and might be more dangerous. Myth #2: Reverse parking is less safe. Parking lots are full of pedestrians, and therefore the probability of injury is high. Reverse parking is about making the environment safer when the driver leaves the parking space. When reverse parking, a driver is going into a known space with no vehicle and pedestrian traffic. When leaving the parking space, the driver is able to see the surroundings more clearly. On the other hand, backing out of a parking space means going out into unknown and changing traffic. A driver’s view is further hindered by the cars parked next to it. The other cars are directly in the driver’s blind spots. https://www.geotab.com/blog/reverse-parking/...See MoreA Post Office Rant!
Comments (90)When we built in the country it never crossed my mind about what to do with trash. Then we found out we had to burn it or drive to a dump many miles away. We did both but it was a pain. About 20 years ago a company started renting dumpsters. I love it. The dumpster is emptied every other week, bright and early. I'm a bit peeved at them right now. Because the dumpster faces north, a good strong wind blows the lids open. No problem really, I'd get the mail and put the lids back. Until a raccoon decided to take up residence nearby. I'd lay in bed and hear one of the lids going up and down and the next morning I noticed he got into the trash. We found a big cinder block and put it on top of the lids and try as he might the Raccoon couldn't open it. Most of the time I remembered to take the brick off so the trash guys wouldn't have to deal with it, but there were other times I forgot and the brick would end up in the grass. The last time I forgot, they deliberately put the brick in their truck! How do I know it was deliberate? Because I was laying in bed hearing the lift thingy going up and down over and over and I couldn't figure out what they were doing. The brick was gone. Grrr. Anyway, if you live in the country where there's hardly any traffic, get a dumpster. I take the trash out when I get the mail. Easy....See Morebob_cville
