What's popping out of the ground? Heritage or rootstock?
Comments (10)What I do when this happens is wait until the new emerging rose blooms, then if it is not the original rose, but I like it, I try to identify it. I have gotten some of my most beloved roses (de la Grifferaie is my favorite) this way - one person's root stock is another person's amazing antique rose. Of course, it depends on what the root stock is - some of them are not of any value to me (Dr, Huey, for example). But, I find it fun and exciting to wait and see what is coming up. Comments (8)uscjusto, tomato seed leaves are simple elongated ovals. See the second photo in this FAQ: http://faq.gardenweb.com/faq/lists/tomato/2005015135020413.html Technically these seed leaves are called cotyledons or dicotyledons; the latter simply means there are two of them. (Grass, corn, lilies, and dichondra, however, begin with a single monocotyledon.) Dicotyledons of poison ivy and the common blue violet (violet sororia) look much the same as tomato dicotyledons. (And yes, I do find them in the same flower beds.) === Tomatoes will never grow shoots from roots. No, but suckers can grow in the leaf axil (the area between the main stem and any leaf location) ... whether the leaf is still there or not. So if you have stripped the older leaves and planted the seedling low, you could have suckers starting from those buried leaf locations. I have seen that happen....See MoreAny new developements on Nuna popping beans?
Comments (25)Dar we were looking at the weather map on TV the other night, a good part of the States is much, much, hotter then the usual, I pray you all get some rain. Our June has given us a few unusually hot days but right now we are back to cooler days and rain, our typical June weather. Last summer we had days that were hotter than anything in recorded history, in over 100 years. Not knowing what to expect when I planted the Nunas you sent me I only planted 2 of the numbered varieties you sent and I have to admit it took a lot of tries to get any of the commercial variety to germinate, perseverance paid off I finally have 3 plants in a 5 gallon tub, I can add a bamboo pole for them to climb on if needed. All are planted in tubs so they could be moved to the greenhouse if needed to finish off. By the way the leaves on the commercial variety are much smaller then the other two. Once I see how they develop and grow here I'll not be such a mother hen about the whole deal :), Right now the tubs are encased in copper mesh, this is if not the slug, it certainly is the snail capital of the world. I could give Floral a run for the money on who has the most LOL. Annette...See More- 8 years agolast modified: 8 years ago
