Catspa, It sounds like tea noisettes really like it here. I was at the SanJo Heritage Rose Garden last weekend. I checked out a huge Crepuscule on a row end there. This rose was occupying a space roughly the same size as the arbor I'm planning to build, but it looked like someone was fighting with it to keep it in bounds. It had scars on it from where someone had pruned out 3" diameter canes. I don't mind the rose sending canes down over the window during the growing season, but this was more than I am prepared to deal with. Are all tea noisettes as vigorous as this? Are Alister Stella Grey's canes a bit more pliable? Also, do your tea noisettes go deciduous, or do they keep their foliage all winter? Ingrid, I'm sorry to hear that your Reve d'Or got cooked. I'm planning to tear out the sidewalk in the picture and build the arbor roughly 12' high, 10' wide and 4' deep, so the arbor and bed around it will be bigger than the existing bed and won't get reflected heat from the sidewalk. Also, the rose will be planted right on our graywater line, so it will get plenty of water. I realize that it is still a gamble growing a rose in a situation like this, but I'm hard headed, and want to give it a try. I can live with the singed blossoms during the dog days of summer; after all, they look how I feel at that point in the year. I think that wall would be vastly improved by being covered with a rose. I have to try it before I give up and start fighting with a wisteria

Most climbing sports of modern roses do not perform as well as the bushes. At least that's been my experience. Perhaps it just a result of my growing zone where winter dieback forces us to start with a severely pruned plant each year? Except for a few, the concensus seems to be the same from most growers. I believe there are many other good climbers that meet your color needs and perform much better.

Wow! Thanks for all the advice. Yes I have heard that Angel Face is susceptible to black spot, but it seems to do very well here in Perth - maybe because it is so hot and dry here? And we get many hours of warm sunshine in the day. Luckily, I picked mine up super-cheaply and they look extremely healthy (for now!) so I'll see how I go. If I have to shovel-prune them, it won't be too much money down the drain. I just love the blooms and the fragrance, so fingers crossed! I'm going to look up all the combinations everyone suggested, but they all sound great and in keeping with my theme. Thanks so much! When I get everything in, I'll have to post a couple of photos, to show you how it all worked out. I had a bad car accident 3 weeks ago, and my back is a bit sore, so I'm pacing myself - a couple of hours every two or three days. The planting is so rewarding, I'm really enjoying it. I've got a row of 9 standard Seductions, planted with John Clare. Catmint to go in front. I've got a row of Pittosporums (screenmaster) screening another low wall. In front are Windermere, Molineux, Abraham Darby (plus waiting on Leonardo Da Vinci), dwarf lavender, pink and white daisies, mauve nemesia. I've got a Pierre de Ronsard on a wall near my front gate, with a bed of small cottage plants in front (stocks, foxgloves, violets etc). I'm going to put a thornless climber up amongst my wisteria. I have an old bed with a couple of camellias, azaleas and a fuschia for a bit of winter colour. I'm getting 3 garden arches, and I will train over them Zephirine Drouhin, Kathleen Harrop and Lamarque. It's spring here now, so I'm hoping that by next spring and the one after, it will all be really established. Thanks again.

Aloha: good, strong fragrance, had good disease resistance in my hot dry climate with only an occasional touch of black-spot (ie maybe three spots on the entire plant!), blooms fade after a while from mid-pink with coppery-pink hearts to lavender, IIRC, so not too ugly at that stage, until they go brown... BUT, she stayed more like a tallish shrub than an all-out climber for me; I couldn't see her covering a big wall. Pretty good repeat bloom in full sun with no fertiliser other than garden trimmings and leaves and a pinch of potash. It may not be quite what you're looking for, but dear Mme Alfred Carriere is really a terrific rose for covering a tall, wide, north facing wall in a wide variety of climates (inc here in S. Australia and in cool, permanently rainy Wales in the UK). Divine fragrance. Drops her spent blooms cleanly. Care free once established other than a bit of tidying up of dead/spent bits now and then. Never showed a hint of disease in my climate, some report powdery mildew, but generally reputed to be healthy. Bloomed in part dappled shade in almost continuous flushes pretty much year round here, without fertiliser other than some of her own trimmings left around the base (lazy gardener..) and only an occasional watering in the longest, hottest, driest periods.
