My first greenhouse and looking for building/design tips
Comments (15)LOL Wyndyacre - you are the reason I started looking for doors! I am not understanding completely how you did the foundation. Why the sono tubes? Is the frame bottom attached to them and then you have pavers as the actual floor? I may go with that if I am understanding you correctly. I don't want to use pressure treated anything so I am trying to figure out what would be in contact with the ground. I searched on here but the searches just are working as they usually do so I just looked through as many posts as I could the other night. The windows I got are frameless and I like them that way. I like things to match and this way I'm not worrying about mismatched frames, etc. Yes, I am pretty particular about some things. I am hoping to get a slider for the GH that works but so far the only used ones I have seen have been $250 (same guy I got my panels from). We are getting a Habitat for Humanity store in the next few months here and I am really excited to start shopping there - my husband isn't so thrilled....See MorePost photos of your greenhouse and workplace in Garden Galleries

Comments (10)Thanks for all the nice comments, guys. This greenhouse was a long time coming, and I'm thrilled to finally have it up and running. The floor is gravel right now, BTW. I may put something like pavers on top of it later ... and I might not. Craig's List has sites in Atlanta, Athens, Auburn, Brunswick, Columbus, etc., in Georgia. Pick one or two sites that are closest to you, and I bet you'll find users near by who are posting items that you can use. None of the materials I collected were right here in Fredericksburg. I have driven as far as 3 hours to get an item that I wanted -- the antique store doors that I'll use on my workshop building, for example. Most of the action on CL in my area is toward DC and Maryland .. which can be as far as 2 hours away (the skylights were in eastern Md.) I know it's still early in the season, but things are humming along fairly well. The only glitch so far was when the temps got down into the teens on Monday night -- my water line froze solid .. even with the heat tape on it. Fortunately roses can take the cold, so no harm was done ... except for a broken hose fitting. Now I have to make time to get DH out there with me so we can install the pool cover on the beams over head, to lower the ceiling and keep in a little more heat. I can see that hanging out here will help with my winter blues. I love seeing what everyone else is doing in their greenhouses, while everything outside is frozen. Comments (16)Fawnridge, I love crotons. I have a few, none rare I don't think. I like pink tones, and especially like a small Croton 'Piecrust' I picked up last season at USF. Jupiterplants, I know what you mean about the Sealing Wax palm. I currently have 4 of them. They are growing well. I killed my first one that I had several years ago by planting it too close to the sliding door of the greenhouse, where there was unfortunately a draft. It got a bit chilled and bit the dust. I made certain to plant the new ones (I was really, REALLY lucky and got them for only $10 each when I made a larger order from Hawaii, otherwise I wouldn't have so many)pretty far into the much warmer interior of the GH. I really like palms and am a sucker for the smaller growing understory palms that have new red leaves. This is one of my favorites, Calyptrocalyx pachystachis I am also a sucker for the "finger like" Anthuriums. I bought this Anthurium polydactylon off of eBay 2 years ago as a smallish plant, and finally trained it up a totem. I habe been growing the Costus "Maroon Chalice" for years and love the bright red architectural look of its stems. I discovered by trial and error that the Costus "Green Chalice" is actually root hardy here and comes back, but the Maroon Chalice doesn't. So I keep a goodly patch going in the GH thank you to everyone who has replied so far. I'd like to see pics of your stuff!...See MoreMarisha
