Lighting Design Dilemma

What dimensions for a neck for this lamp?

This is a vintage walnut/brass lamp that might have been a torchiere. I want to convert it into a large table lamp but am not sure of the measurement for a brass or walnut neck. The lamp base is 19 1/2” tall and 5” around the wood and 7” at the brass base.

How tall is it before the neck? Seems too tall already for a table lamp.

Depends on where you plan to put it. Think in terms of total dimensions -- there are 24" lamps, and 30" lamps -- the former tend to be for reading and the latter for entrances or corners of rooms. You can get a big shade, but at some height a tall lamp is going to shine in your eyes when seated .

Last summer one of my hens had the same sort of problem. I started calling her Mohawka because she just had a little ridge of feathers up the back of her neck. My vet has had to limit his practice and doesn't see livestock animals anymore, but when I talked to him about it (while he was seeing one of my dogs),he gave me a couple of doses of Ivermectin to give her 10 days apart. Don't know if that was what did it, but eventually Mohawka grew her feathers back. The other stuff? Who knows why chickens do what chickens do?!?! Some of my birds seem to prefer to eat off the floor instead of out of the feeder, too. Maybe she enjoys feeling like she's "stealing" the new birds' food? Hope they shape up and quit driving you nuts soon!

What kind of lamp(?) did this shade fit?

The Sears chandelier is interesting & I think the burner assembly is probably a good candidate for my shade although in a different usage, possibly as a combo shade & chimney. I wonder what that particular type of burner was called? I can't imagine mine used as a chimney with an outer shade covering the bottom half of it - if for no other reason than it would obscure too much light. And it's fairly large around the bottom, not to mention that it was probably an expensive piece. Frankly, I never considered it a chimney at all but the shape & height IS more akin to a chimney than a shade or globe. Instead of answers, now I have more questions!!!!!

oceanna, The rose one is a bolster pillow I purchased in a speciality store. It travels all over the living room. Sometimes on the piano stool, sometimes on the sofa and sometimes on the piano chair in the photo. One time put up a thread on how to make a simple bolster pillow. If you like to make pillows do a search. The two pillows with the tapestry (the Spanish dancer and the white Gardenia) first I made the pillows, then hand sewed the tapestry on... then hand sewed on the trim. Then stuffed them...On both these pillows I used the brown velour -- that we used to upholstered the brown chair with in the LR. I bought so much of it, I could make even more pillows with it. None of these pillows are washable. In the LR they get no wear and tear. In the family room, (on the sofa)when they get worn or dirty I make new ones. Ebay has quite a few dog needlepoint tapestries. I have the sweetest little nedlepont pillow from Ebay, that I just added fringe to and it's just precious. The hand made needlepoint is expensive as compared to the printed tapestries, however they are wonderful. I love them.

I'm thinking that the wedgies won't work right because I have an ext. table that fits around my machine. And my machine is as close to the edge as possible with the ext. table. MaryLiz, I think I get those Trapezius headaches too. Most of my headaches are tension related & there was certainly some quilt tension going on last night! wish I had a built in tension regulator like my machine. :) Where do you get the exercise disks? Is it like a donut? I'll have to try some type of chair adjustment. Right now I'm using a folding chair because...that's what I have. Might need to get a cushy rolly chair eventually. My eyesight has been changing...not good with reading...so probably need to FINALLY get some reading glasses. 8) Taking a break is also a good idea. I tend to push thru until I'm done. I did take a few breaks & visited this forum to post my questions as I was going on...LOL! But most of ya'll go to bed before me since I'm on Pacific time. My other problem is lighting. The extra light I have is a halogen desk lamp. It's great, but I don't want to turn it on while I'm working on this big bulky project for fear of setting it a flame! Have no where safe to put it at the moment. I could probably get DH to build a little lamp shelf when I finally get settled.

So if it's 19" tall, and let's say you add a 2" neck and a 9" harp, it will be about 30" tall.

That's definitely a bit large for a table lamp. But it depends on how high the table is. Most mid-century modern tables are short, so it may work. I'd figure out where to place it, and then take it to a lighting store that specializes in restoring lamps.

Keep in mind that the bottom of the shade should be at or below your eye level when seated, so that the bulb isn't visible.

Thirty inches is an extremely common lamp height these days. How you use a lamp, where you use it, shade proportion to base, the harp, the finial, all matter, for a good look. All said, you're probably not a lighting designer and a lamp either looks right, or it doesn't. I'm not a lamp creator, either, I DO know what looks good where and on what.

The price of lampshades, unless you head to Target or the discount stores has soared.....

and all considered? Maybe not everything needs a rescue: ) because you might have a hundred bucks into a rescue even with no guesswork.
