What Color Siding Should I Put On My House If . . . .
Comments (13)just_me_6: Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack your thread with my gardening project. As for your siding color for your garden with blues and purples, a soft yellow or creamy white would give you backlighting for those colors to be visible. Some pinks might not go well with a yellow (although I break that rule), and you can use greenery behind the pink if that's an issue. A yellow or white will draw more attention to your house, but those colors work well with country cottage gardens. As you can see from my photos, we built in the back of a 2 acre meadow that has mature woods on 2 sides. We chose the grey/sage/cream to let the lines of the house show up without distracting from the surrounding natural areas. I had considered using a deep brown on the siding, but with our southern exposure on the front, I was concerned about paint fading (we are passive solar). I mentioned having used these same colors twice, so here are the exact colors on my previous house, which was a craftsman-influenced design set in a wooded area with minimal lawn. The only color difference here is that we used a deep charcoal on the window sashes of the true divided lights....See MoreI Want Some Type Of Home Frangrance - What Are You Using at Home
Comments (53)I'm surprised that no one has mentioned fragrance lamps. These are smaller glass lamps that you fill with fragrance oils, light for 5 minutes and then blow out the flame. The oil will burn and take odors out of your home and leave a pleasant scent. The Lampe Berger system includes the catalyst (burner) and the catalyst medium (home fragrances). According to Lampe Berger, the catalytic combustion is a flameless combustion, which takes place because of the action of a catalyst. Odor-causing molecules in the room are attraced to the heat developed by the catalysis. The heat then breaks down these molecules through oxidation and prevents them from recombining. A Berger lamp is different from other types of air fresheners in that a Berger lamp actually eliminates the odor, instead of just masking it. Also, a Berger lamp actively cleans the air, also something normal air fresheners donâÂÂt do. You may be curious where Berger lamps originate from. Berger lamps were invented by Maurice Berger in the early twentieth century. Berger lamps were considered a disinfecting home appliance. Through a unique process of high temperature catalytic combustion, Berger lamps eliminates and destroys the molecules behind unpleasant odors such as cigarette smoke and cooking while pleasantly perfuming the air and destroying bacteria. You do have to follow a certain protocol when burning these or you'll burn up your wick. The top cap can get hot, so I always keep mine on a high shelf. The brands of lamps are numerous as are the oils. I buy mine at the link below, the off brand lamps work fine. I find all of the oils very strong so I mix them half and half in the lamp with 91% rubbing alcohol (available at Walmart). Do NOT use anything except the 91%. I burn mine only about twice a week or when I have company. Here is a link that might be useful: Courtney's Candles...See MoreSelling our house...what should I do about this backsplash?
Comments (44)I do think that a better faucet - a pull-down style - is a low expense but big return in "first impression" points. Hopefully the sink resurfacing will be done excellently, and not look obviously a re-coat. Such little things can go a long way toward creating a favorable feeling toward the house. Good lighting would be too, and might be easily improved with 3000k (at the least) LED bulbs in the existing fixtures if possible. I always like to see some simple framing around a window and it isn't expensive or hard to do, either. Just choose a profile that agrees with the cabinets and baseboards. If you do decide to add pulls, look at styles by Hafele- they have some nice simple designs (and you want to keep them simple for sure) and not expensive. Just don't go for the cheap looking skinny 3" pulls that are builder grade. When I looked at the photos again, my eye was drawn to the empty wall to the left of the window... perhaps a print, that incorporates some of the blue from the tile, would look good there....See MoreWhat type of wood filler should I use?
Comments (5)JBWeld also makes a wood epoxy which is the product I am currently using. One tip I found useful is applying the epoxy a bit too full and then waiting until it is starting to harden to get a good surface finish. Don't wait until it is rock hard to clean up the appearance. It will take some practice but it is not a super difficult product to apply....See MoreCristina M.
