So, my enabler brings home another tree
Comments (9)Just fyi olive trees can be pruned heavily. Prune in autumn during dry weather. If one is not bothered about fruiting they can be pruned to shape just like a hedging plant. They should be kept in much larger pots than your average citrus of the same size. Water and fertilise sparsely and make sure you provide a bit of boron together with the other common micronutrients. Too much water and fertiliser will decrease its life span (which is extremely long) and may cause fungal and bacterial infections. In its native environment the olive tree never goes dormant and relies on autumn to spring rains for its survival. It is very drought tolerant during the long dry summer once established. If planted in ground it may be better to avoid much mulching around its root area....See MoreKitchen Layout Help - Help us bring this 90s Kitchen up to date!
Comments (7)Dear Kiwi13, You have an architectural floor plan. Contact the architect or builder (if this was a spec home) and ask them which direction the ceiling framing runs in the Family Room and Living Room. In most cases the first floor ceiling framing will be run in the direction of the shortest span. In English your first floor ceiling framing probably runs from front to the back of your home.Meaning you should be able to remove either wall once you confirm the ceiling framing direction. If you are like the majority of home owners and not going to keep a formal living room, because you just never use it. You may want to consider reconfiguring that whole area of your new home. So you can get the family room and kitchen you truly want and expect, and that new, different, easier, better life you hope this new home will deliver for you. Tons of possibilities if you reconfigure the family room, kitchen/breakfast room, and living room area, you may not want to take out a wall as much as move one. Keep a family room and kitchen which you want. And add an informal dining room (breakfast area is a little tight), office, study, library whatever you need? The kitchen you have now I believe is just too small for the size of this home and awkward. Like it doesn't belong to this home. I can’t imagine that the realtors wouldn’t help you answer this simple question, especially if this is all it will take to sell this home. Hope this has been helpful. Comments (10)We live in a [gasp] tract home that we bought when it was in the framing stage. Every Friday on my way home from work I would stop and walk through, and take photos (so I have photos of where all the plumbing, electrical, etc., is). When I would notice things that weren't done properly I would point them out, and it was rarely graciously received. Even though the builder allowed a certain amount of customization, all customization had to be fully paid for in advance, in cash, before it would be done. Nonetheless, an often-heard reply to what I would point out was, "until you close escrow, you don't own the house." I would always reply that there was no way in hell that we weren't going to close escrow because we had sold our other home and had loan approval, and we weren't going to walk away from all the money we had paid for customization. And then I would say they could either fix it now when it was easy to fix, or they could deal with me after escrow when we were still within the warranty period and those fixes would be more difficult, and more expensive for them, to do. Everything I wanted fixed was fixed. So, be nice, but firm. And good luck!...See MoreApropos of nothing, pool photos
Comments (22)Atlas was one of the titans of Greek mythology., who held up the world on his shoulders. Atlas Shrugged, the title of the novel (which is one very long allegory of Rand’s Objectivist philosophy) is the central theme of the book, i.e. what happens to society when the titans of industry whose vision and competence responsible for our world of commercial innovation decide to go on strike until the thankless society they benefit stops thwarting their progress with regulations. The picture Mtn posted of the giant at the edge of the pool reminded me of the Farnese Titan in Naples. Atlas supporting the world on his shoulders: Atlas deciding to take a dip (or measure the side of the pool): It just struck me as whimsical and funny! Full disclosure... I went to a school founded on Objectivist principles and incidentally had my appendix out at age 14 in Naples, where that particular statue of Atlas is located. It’s not necessarily that the subject matter is esoteric but the reference is arcane; memes of that motif are also jokes amongst some of the alumni. Again, sorry about that Mtn....See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
