Quick help, please! $4500 for this job?
Comments (20)The latest update from DH (who was home to greet our guy when he arrived this morning) is that he is going to reuse the tiles if possible and lay them each by hand. He has a helper who is cleaning off the bottoms so they'll lay flat. DH (in a nice way) offered that if he wasn't comfortable with the 2x2s we could find someone else for the shower floor tile-laying. He said he very much appreciated the gesture but was committed to getting this right for us. So there you have it. I will be really surprised if it looks bad again tonight when I get home, but you know, life's full of surprises. I'm kinda squeezing my eyes shut and crossing my fingers today. I want him to be successful! Mostly for us, but for him, too. It took him 3.5 hours the first time, and it will take that long again, at least, setting them by hand. For all that work, I do hope it's right. I don't like to see anyone's efforts wasted. FWIW, he's an established contractor who does more than just tile, so I think the problem is that he does tile but doesn't SPECIALIZE in tile. For a perfect, efficient tile job, we should have persevered to find a tile specialist who knew the Kerdi system in our area, but that's hard to find unless you know who to call. And we didn't know who to call, so we started with Schluter. I can't explain why the 2x2 would flummox this guy, but I have to say, he isn't a "wanna be" when it comes to renovation jobs, just maybe isn't quite as experienced with certain types of tile. Maybe he usually works with fiberglass shower pans? I will update later. Thanks!...See MoreNew Gallery Wall (pics)
Comments (35)wigardenerwannabe, For years I have picked up frames whenever I would see them cheaply. I have a stash of empty picture frames and when I have enough for spot I pull them out. Sometimes I rummage around and look for ones w/ dings and scratches and ask for a discounted price since the piece is damaged. Then I just take a black sharpie and hide the knick. My frames usually come from TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Ross, Wal-Mart and IKEA. I always like things to fit into a perfect little box so all of my arrangements are even w/ nothing hanging out on the ends. That's just my personal preference for me. I often admire those gallery walls that I see that are uneven but I like symmetry 95% of the time. Often I will use my DR table as it is a long rectangle and just start laying out frames until I get a look that I like. If the arrangement will be larger I use the floor. I stopped using a tape measure and level a long time ago because when you buy cheaper frames the hooks on the back are rarely in line. I'm pretty good at eyeballing things and have usually been able to just start hanging them one by one w/ minor adjustments on eveness as I go. We'll see how badly that goes when I attempt a grid above my fireplace. And now thanks to my friends at GW who told me about 3M it will go much faster from here on out! pps7 - the wall color is BM Jonesboro Cream....See MoreFloor to ceiling gallery walls filled with stuff!
Comments (62)I don't think there IS a "happy place", only a perfect & happy place for now. And how long now lasts depends, sometimes for me it can mean many years and sometimes not. I do rotate my art on purpose from time to time because I like to see it anew, with fresh eyes, & in different light. Sometimes to make sure I still want it in my life or if it is time to let go. That, for me, is part of art collecting...de-growth as well as acquisition. I find the hardest part is moving a piece from a wall where it looks perfect but too familiar to a space less perfect but that makes me see it again. Oh, and here's a picture of Bunny Williams new flat. Another who moves her stuff about from time to time :-)...See Moreneed quick diy update for fireplace!
