Pink Promise - To Remove or Not to Remove?
Comments (3)Bayarea-girl, I've been observing Pink Promise in a client's garden for over a year. The garden is in southern California inland; very hot and dry, so conditions are different than yours. To my heart, this is a very okay rose. And I lived with very okay roses in my own garden for more than five years. I recently shovel pruned them all, gave then homes, and planted all new roses -- most based on advice I got on this forum and from talking to rosarians and visiting rose gardens. ALL based on what I head-over-heels LOVE. It was really hard shovel pruning roses for no good reason -- but it was one of the best gardening decisions I've ever made. Now I can't wait to visit the new rose garden so I can be thrilled every day by roses that move my soul. jannike...See Moreremove or not to remove jiffy pellet netting
Comments (8)I think you're free to choose. I liked removing the netting. Had to do it before the roots go through though. If I let them go too long, then the netting would have to stay. I know I ripped some roots. I don't think that set the plants back, but I don't know. However, I have stopped using the Jiffy pellets. I bought a seed starter kit containing a heating mat, 1020 tray with dome and 809 inserts (72 cells). I use that one exclusively these days. It's cheaper than buying the Jiffy pellets and with 72 cells I can also afford to put one seed per cell. I start the slower peppers (typically Chinense types) weeks before the faster ones (typ. Jalapenos). I find one tray to be more than enough when I stagger the plants....See Moreto remove or not to remove shingles
Comments (2)I had my roof redone last year. My roofer said always remove shingles before laying new ones. The roof boards can then be inspected and replaced if needed. It adds around $500 to an average sized colonial roof but is worth it. A roof is not where you want to cut corners...See MoreTree Root Wire Basket. Remove or not to remove?
Comments (22)Natural burlap is often treated with a preservative to increase its longevity. Sometimes it is tinted with a turquoise colorant but many times it is difficult to distinguish from nontreated burlap. For that reason, most horticulturists suggest removal of the burlap from at least the top and sides of the rootball so as to not impede lateral root development at all and to prevent issues with water penetration or wicking. Ideally, you want nothing to impede the healthy establishment of any tree and that includes removing as many wrappings as possible before planting, inspecting the rootball to remove or loosen any circling or girdling roots, planting at the proper depth and not amending individual planting holes. Failing to adhere to any of these recommendations puts the tree at risk. Probably not tomorrow.....need to think in tree time.......but certainly over time. Check any ISA website or .edu publication on tree planting to confirm....See MoreMarilyn Campbell
